Depending on the vehicle it could be in a number of places. Most vehicles would have it in there ECM, some on the engine block, floor pan, fire wall or almost any major part of the body.
LOOK AT YOUR VIN NUMBER THROUGH WINDSHIELD 8TH NUMBER FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ENGINE CODE OR LOOK ON YOUR VECHICLE REGISTRATION. VIN H 305 ENGINE AND VIN K 350 SOME TIMES 305 OR 350 BE ON THE INTAKE MANIFOLD OR FOUND ENGINE CASE PAD FRONT RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE CYLINDER BLOCK.
The VIN number is the same as the chassis number of your car. The VIN number is
found on the left driver's door jam B pillar. It is also found under the
hood (bonnet) on the right side usually on the firewall. The engine
number is found on the right side of the engine , forward, close to the
timing chain (belt), down at the junction of the engine block and oil

The only number that should be on the main engine block is the engine number this wont be on a metal plate welded on or soldered on. The number will be stamped into the main engine block not the cylinder head it will be just bellow their on the main engine block.
