Sounds like your transfer case in neutral. You have to engage the transfer case back into gear then shift selector to drive or reverse. When your transfer is in neutral the transmission will not operate. Good luck.

How do i engage the transfer into gear

====E.S.O.F.==== Electronic Shift On-the-Fly (ESOF) transfer cases have a dash-mounted selector switch or buttons with front sealed automatic locking axle hubs or drive flanges. Some models also have what is called ''selec trac'', which has a slider switch on the center console. Unlike the manual transfer case, this system has a transfer case motor. To engage the four-wheel-drive system the vehicle must be moving at a lower speeds, the speed at which 4x4 can be engaged depends on the vehicle. This is only for the four-wheel-drive '''high''' setting. To engage the four-wheel-drive '''low''' setting, the vehicle must be stopped and the transmission must be shifted to neutral, then the four-wheel-drive low can be selected.

I noticed I did not mention, make sure your transfer case shift motor has power and is working. You might need another person to check this as they engage buttons on the dash if that is where your 4x4 contrils are ok, good luck.

sounds like it might be an encoder moter, but the best thing you can do is take it to a good transmission shop so they can hook up their reader and find out for sure

SOURCE: 1997 chevy 1500 makes a gear grinding noise in 2wd

Chalk your tires and have a 3/8 drive ratchet in hand slip under rear end of truck with a flash as well drivers side differential axle their is a 3/8 fitting your ratchet will fit rite in insert the ratchet and counter clock wise loosen out the fitted fill plug using index finer insert and bend your finger if you feel no rear end fluid you will need to top it up this made be the wind gear noise your hearing see owners manual for sae grade. If fluid is full consider the problem will most likely be a transmission problem and is going to be internal and you will need to have the truck hoisted up to properly diagnose the problem so you will might have to consider taking it in to a transmission specialist shop.

Can I put a transmission from a 2002 Chevy Silverado Z71 into a 2007 Chevy Silverado Z71 4L60E both four wheel drive

2wd or 4wd?
learn this first
4l60e is not full spec part number ever, it is ONLY a series class only.
read the ATSG manuals on this box it tells you that in chapter 1.
the list of tranny swaps are endless, (HUGE)
learn that the gear ratio's most be the the same or the TCM will go MAD (chaos)
  1. fits bell.mount to engine,
  2. same length or 4wd fit up or tail shaft.
  3. mounts that same
  4. same gear ratios'/
  5. same solenoid shift patterns and TCC lockup.
  6. and more lots more. really what could be harder to match?????
ask your transmission re-builder this. they have an expensive data base access that answers all this that most never want to disclose. after all why help you buy elsewhere./??? Realty 101

the transmission has sub codes on the side label

I tried to put my 07 dodge ram 1500 in 4x4 it made a loud grinding noise and now its stuck and wont go in gear to drive

I did this once on an old Toyota land cruiser. The problem was I was on a hard surface and the gears were fighting each other. I had to move b4 I could shift out of 4wd. But I could shift drive gears.
I would try moving truck manually till you can get it out of 4wd.

Can some explain the proper way to shift from 2wd

4wd auto: you can shift into this mode at anytime. it is good for conditions where you might need 4wd.
4wdhi:: you can shift into this at speeds up to 30mph and both of these back to 2wd while in gear.
4wd lo : stop vehicle and shift truck into nuetral ok to be rolling around 3mph shift into 4lo then put in gear same when shifting back to 2wd

My 97 z71 wont shift from 4wd back into 2wd

sometimes you have to reverse for it to kick out of four wheel drive. Make sure you put the truck into neutral before you switch out of four wheel drive into two wheel drive. If that doesn't work, your transmission might be sticking.
