In the early days engine manufacturers used any code they liked when numbering and identifying engines and cars. It wasn't until later years that a universal /global system was adapted by all manufacturers and that was the VIN numbers ( vehicle identification numbers which comprised a combination of 16 numbers and letters
In effect the vin number is the bar code for the vehicle.

Why do you want to change this? Depending on which state you live in, procedures vary, but the VIN appears other places on these cars as well, so most state allow you to use the same VIN even if engine is changed. Those which do not typically allow you to apply for a special title as a "reconstructed" or "modified" vehicle, which may cost extra. Some folks grind off the VIN on a replacement engine block and re-stamp it with the old #s

D9ae6015ed21 id # on my ford eng what does it all mean?

The first four digits denote the year, model of vehicle, and type of part.
D9 is 1979 model year, AE is full size model and engine.
6015 is Ford's part number for just about every engine they have produced since the 1950s.
ED21 denotes the actual part and how many times it has been changed.
This could be a 5th version 351Winsdor engine from a full size car.
The parts dept of any Ford dealer should be able to tell you for sure.
