Just dropped a different engine in 98 Ranger. Will start and idle but that's it. getting P0102 code.
"Basically this means that there is a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit. A more technical description would be that the MAF circuit had lower than expected voltage (air flow)."
Symptoms: You will likely not notice any serious drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a general decrease in power or sluggishness.
Causes: A code P0102 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
Possible Solutions: The simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures first:

That code is for the mass air flow sensor. That sensor takes the temperature of the air going into the engine and sends it to the computer. the faster the engine is reved up the more air flows past it making it cooler... the signal sent to the computer is used by the computer to regulate fuel and timing etc. when that sensor gets dirty the computer cannot tell if the engine is running or not. SO. it won't give it more fuel to increase the RPM's. to fix this problem, you can remove it and clean it with a non oily cleaning solution that will not leave residue. something like pure alcohol in a squirt bottle is perfect. I suggest not touching it with a cloth or anything like that. they are extremely sensitive. it is locates in the air pipe going from the air filter box to the engine air inlet. sometimes they are right on the air inlet. when you see it, it will resemple some kind of light bulb with the glass taken off it. some look like a really fine hair, while others look like a resistor out of an old radio. either way it is delicate.
SOURCE: how do you change the thermostat on a 98 ford ranger 2.5L
CAUTION
If the radiator is filled to the top with coolant and the engine is run without the radiator cap in place, the coolant will expand and spill over as the engine warms up.
When replacing the thermostat, also replace the gasket that seals the thermostat in place and is positioned between the water outlet casting and the engine block.
Generally, these gaskets are made of a composition fiber material and are die-cut to match the thermostat opening and mounting bolt configuration of the water outlet. Thermostat gaskets generally come with or without an adhesive backing. The adhesive backing of gaskets holds the thermostat securely centered in the mounting flange, leaving your both hands free to align and bolt the thermostat securely in place.
Hopefully this is helpfully

MIGHT be the tps
The TPS is sensitive to heat, moisture and vibration leading to the failure of some units. The sensor is a sealed unit and cannot be repaired only replaced. A TPS may fail gradually leading to a number of symptoms which can include one or more of the following: -
[edit]
Manual recalibration
In all cases a manual recalibration of the TPS may resolve the issues at least on a temporary basis. To recalibrate the TPS: -

remove interior door panel(need special tool to pop plastic clips holding panel to door)with panel off remove plastic film, with window up you should be able to see two 10m nuts-bolts to remove-also have to pop lever off that goes down to door latch

P0102 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input
The MAF sensor circuit is monitored by the PCM for low air flow (or voltage) input through the comprehensive component monitor (CCM). If during key ON engine running the air flow (or voltage) changes below a minimum calibrated limit, the test fails. MAF sensor disconnected
MAF circuit open to PCM
VPWR open to MAF sensor
PWR GND open to MAF sensor
MAF RTN circuit open to PCM
MAF circuit shorted to GND
Intake air leak (near MAF sensor)
A closed throttle indication [throttle position (TP) sensor system]
Damaged MAF sensor
Damaged PCM
A MAF V PID (MAF PID) reading less than 0.23 volts (Refer to equivalent grams/second chart in GO to Pinpoint Test DC ) in continuous memory or key ON and engine running indicates a hard fault.
P0113 - Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Circuit High Input Indicates the sensor signal is greater than Self-Test maximum. The IAT sensor maximum is 4.6 volts or -50°C (-58°F). Open circuit in harness
Sensor signal short to power
Damaged sensor
Improper harness connection
Damaged PCM
IAT V PID reading greater than 4.6 volts with key ON and engine OFF or during any engine operating mode indicates a hard fault.
