Many times this type of issue is caused by the motor that changes the transfer from 2 to 4 wheel drive, they get stuck, another issue is dirty fluid, have you had the transfwer case serviced?

You need to check the cv joints in the front end or the u joints in the front drive shaft. If none of the above then the problem is internal in the front diff.

Dodge Durango 4 wheel drive won't engage

Four wheel drive vehicles with inside the vehicle four wheel select buttons etc. have plug in four wheel drive control modules, you need to find where yours is located some are under the dash, behind the glove department. others are under the battery box..it can be a DIY job. they are somewhat expensive $ 200 or so..and come in so many modeks..you need to find the exact number of your modual even though you give your vehicle model they vary greatly due to vehicle options...without it your four wheel will not engage....garage cost will be approx $ 400++ so try and find it..Good luck..

I don't have the owners manual, and have never owned a 4x4 in the past, as stupid as this sounds i don't know the proper procedure to engage 4 wheel drill hi

you have a lever or switch that engages 2wheel normal driving 4 wheel high for wet slippery conditions ,then you have four wheel low for real muddy and deep snow conditions
normally change from 2 wheel to four wheel high on the move .important nearly all 4 wheel drive vehicles must be stopped to engage low otherwise do damage to transmission

Sometimes when I go to start my 99 dodge durango it would start, and I move the gear shift a little and it turns right on, over times when it wont start I have to sit there for ten minutes, try it again...

If it seemed to start doing this about the same time transmission was replaced, then I'd have installer adjust/test neutral safety switch at transmission for either being defective or just out of adjustment. If your going to try adjusting it yourself, get back to me for proper procedure. Not knowing how long since transmission was changed, I'm guessing the installer would adjust free of charge, at least they should .
Please include engine size and transmission ( 2 wheel drive or 4x4) info when replying.

Stuck in 4 wheel drive Lo. Want switch back to 2 wheel drive

Smetimes these can be difficult to get out of 4 low. Put the vehicle in neutral and the switch in 2 wheel drive. Give it a minute to shift. If it doesn`t move the vehicle about an inch and try it again. I had an 03 dakota and an 02 durango and they were both like this.

Front end growls when in 4 wheel drive

Before using the 4wd, did you have the transfer case, front differential, and front axle locking hubs inspected, properly lubed, and tested? No one ever does, so don't feel bad if you don't know what shape the 4wd components are in. You probably haven't used 4wd in last five months. Most people don't ever put their 4wd vehicles in 4wd mode, even though the service manual says to operate the vehicle for a minimum of 10 low speed miles every 3000-4000 miles. This helps maintain the proper function of any limited slip parts, internal bearings, and gear components. Operating in 4wd periodically also helps insure any electric devices are working. What you may be hearing is the unused front differential parts, transfer case bits, or electrically controlled locking hubs wearing out from the lack of use, proper maintenance, or just plain age (after all you did say it's a 2001). Front pinion and differential bearings are not usually ever spun/rotated unless the transfer case and hubs are locked in 4wd. If they were starved of gear oil, or dry when you went 4wheeling, you torn them up. Refer to the owner's manual (if you still have it) for proper 4wd opration. You'd be surprised that there are proceedures to do in order to maintain a reliable vehicle. Don't ever just drop it in gear and expect it to work..... I mean come on.... after all, It is a Dodge! Your next step is to find a full service mechanic, with a complete selection of tools and shop supplies (especally a hydrolic press) and schedule an appointment to have the 4wd front components inspected and replaced if neccessary.

Getting rear gears out of the difential case 1999 dodge durango

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Ensure that the transmission is in neutral.
  2. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove brake drum. Refer toBrakes, for proper procedure.
  4. Clean all foreign material from housing cover area.
  5. Loosen housing cover bolts. Drain lubricant from the housing and axle shaft tubes. Remove housing cover.
  6. Rotate differential case so that pinion mate gear shaft lock screw is accessible. Remove lock screw and pinion mate gear shaft from differential case
  7. Push axle shaft inward and remove axle shaft C - clip lock from the axle shaft
  8. Remove axle shaft. Use care to prevent damage to axle shaft bearing and seal, which will remain in axle shaft tube.
  9. Inspect axle shaft seal for leakage or damage.
  10. Inspect roller bearing contact surface on axle shaft for signs of brinelling, galling and pitting. If any of these conditions exist, the axle shaft and/or bearing and seal must be replaced
