Why cant i put my car in park what seems to be the problem?

I need some help please,whenever i try to put my car in the (p),position it gets stuck and i cant get it out. Can somebody please tell me what could be the problem. Any help is greatly appreaciated.

Sounds like you should of mentioned what kind of vehicle you have...
i would assume your shifter lock might have something to do with your issue

Key stuck in ignition car stuck in park key won't go to off position

There may be to much pressure on the steering wheel lock for it to go into the off position. put the parking brake on. put the shifter in neutral gently turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction of where the wheels are pointed and try turning the key to the off position. Good Luck

sounds like the cable from shifter has loosened and is not moving far enough to register it is in park to allow it to release key should be a simlpe enough fix ,buti have not worked on one of those to help you further , alocal mechanic should be able to help u without too much hassle Good luck

the gear shifter may not be fully in park also sometimes if the steering wheel is jaming try to move steering wheel and check vehicle is fully in park is key stuck in the on position or can you turn off car or you just cant remove key

first thing to try would be to remove car from park to a gear and then put firmly back into park...... then retry,
if doin that a few times dont work, you will prob need to replace the ignition cylinder....... make sure it appears gear selector levers parts are all in their place,, visually that is

take it out of park and then back in to park see if that helps and if that dont help try turning key on and off few times

'00 Mercury Cougar Wont get out of Park. gear shifter is stuck

sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

Fuse 23 - 1 5 amp
Fuse 34 - 7 1/2 amp

check enigne light not related.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

raise the front of the car and support on jack stands and secure the back end so it does not roll clean the linkage pivot points and lubricate them with multipurpose grease and that should help you with your problem

Gears

The gear on my car does the same thing, i usually have to hit it kind of hard to the oposite side to get it out of park and into the other gears. Hope this helps
