Won't go in gear, added fluid and got in first gear.
There should be a filler container under the hood where you added the fluid. that's where you check it. If there's fluid in the container, you have other problems with the clutch.
First off, clutch hydraulics use ONLY dot 3/4 brake fluid, if you used any kind of petroleum product you have ruined the clutch master cylinder and clutch slave/actuator(GM's term)cylinder. The level is on the side of the reservoir. If you had to add fluid, you have a leak in the system, probably the slave cylinder first. A master cylinder leak would have fluid on the inside of the firewall, where the master cylinder is mounted(leaking at the back). You bleed clutch hydraulics as you would with brakes.
Yes that is right there is no clutch fluid reservoir only the dot 3 brake fluid it works for clutch as well. I had to have my mechanic take off the actual shifter panel and tighten all the bolts underneath it cuz I had a realy hard time shifting into first (only the shifter clutch was ok) I have a 2005 cobalt was told there was slight wear and to shift with care as that part would be very dear in price!! hope this helps!!
From what I could see, there is nor clutch reservoir. Have you recently replaced any clutch parts? Some people have had problems with non- OEM parts. Also, if air gets into the system, it will need to be bled out.

This is how you do it.
Ensure that the transaxle case temperature is 70° to 90° F (21° to 32° C). With the engine running, shift transmission through all gears. With engine idling in PARK, remove the check plug from the transmission. If transmission has been overfilled, allow fluid to drain out. If no fluid drains out, add fluid through the TRANS FLUID fill cap under the hood on the driver side in 1 pint (0.5 liter) increments until it slightly flows from the check plug. Reinstall the check plug.

Use a copper washer like on the brake lines, not an o ring.

It sounds as though either the throw out bearing or pressure plate are bad. The grinding makes me want to lean towards the pressure plate.

The transmission is sealed. It is intended the fluidis to never need to be checked or changed. The dealer has a probe to check this function.
