I'd check the wires to your starter there may be something loose. Also if your have a manual transmission there is an electrical connection that recognizes if your clutch pedal is engaged and if that connector is unplugged (it should be located above your clutch pedal) your car won't even try to start and have the exact symptoms your explaining. Make sure your battery connectors are tight. Hope this helps

SOURCE: Saturn SL2

I had a similar problem on my 94 SL2. Turn the key…..Nothing.
Even worse, it was intermittent, the worst type to troubleshoot.

At first it was rare. Pulling out the key , putting it back in and turning usually worked.
Over time it got progressively worse and stubborn.

Then one day it wouldn’t start for anything.

My car has an alarm with a ‘starter kill’. My first thought, alarm malfunction. So I located the two wires (they can be any color) going from the alarm module to the steering column. They are usually labeled appropriately on the module. I used a small jumper wire (alligator clips) to short them at the alarm. If the alarm was the problem, this would fix it. It didn’t.

Time to take apart the steering column.

The key tool will be a 7 or 8mm socket. Take off the two piece steering column shroud to expose the wiring.

On the left side, directly opposite the ignition, you’ll see a piece of round plastic held on with two bolts. This is really the ignition switch.
Take out the bolts (again 7 or 8mm).
Take out the two plugs (blue and white) from behind it.
Take off the switch.

Plan A: (For most people)
Replace this. Bring it with you to the parts store to compare it.
Bring it home. Bolt it on. Plug it in. Turn the key.

I can’t tell you how much it was , since I used …

Plan B: (For the deservedly cocky)
I took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts.
They were burnt. I scraped them clean, re-assembled the switch and tested it.
Vroom..

If you need me to explain Plan B, use Plan A.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes. Any other problems, click the ASK button.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

If the problem occurs after the car has been driven long enough to reach normal operating temperature, the problem is the starter. If the 'no crank' occurs cold, retest the battery.

SOURCE: 98 saturn sl1 won't start

I have a 98 Saturn SL1 from time to time it would not start, it wouldn't even try. I knew the battery was good. It turned out to be the cranshaft position sensor.

SOURCE: key wont come out of ignition in 1998 saturn sl2

I had difficulty with my key in my 98 sl1 too but I discovered that I just had to push on the shifter until you hear it click, then you could jimmy the key a bit to get it out.

I have a 2000 Saturn Sl2 it won't start out of the blue it don't click but the radio goes on the light air heater just won't turn

I would check and see if there is an anti-theft mode for that model car. I had the same issue with a Pontiac 2005 Grand Am and it turned out I had to turn the ignition switch all the way on, but not try and start it, and leave it in that position for 8-10 minutes. Then, turn the switch back to the off position, wait 5 seconds, then try and start it.
Hope this helps.

Check battery wires for tightness. That sounds likely to be the problem

93 saturn wont start unless you hold dowm gas pedal

Have you tried cycling the key a few(3-5) times, before cranking(and trying to start it?
What i mean is turn your key on, then off, and on, then off(3-5 times), and then turn the key back on, and try to crank/start the vehicle, See what that does!

If that works then you have a fuel leak somewhere.

if that DOES'NT work, fuel is leaking into your engine while it sits
(more than likely bad fuel injectors!)

Help! I have 98 Saturn SL2 that was live one minute dead the next

Sounds exactly like my 1999 SL2 which had "burning and arching" in the fuse box. Car one day be fine the next I'd take it to the store, come back in 10 minutes and wouldn't start, no radio, no power windows, no keyless entry remote, no rear defrost and even locking doors from inside power buttons it sounded odd. This fixed the problem by replacing the fuse box.

Guessing there may be two issues. One might be "burning and arching" of the fuse box. My 1999 SL2 would periodically not even make a noise to turn over and that fixed that. It also had issues that some electrical components wouldn't work at the same time.
