disconnect all fuel lines to the tank, vacuum hoses to tank and electrical connections at tank, fuel filler hose from gas cap. support the fuel tank and undo the tank straps then lower the fuel tank(it will be heavy). clean surface of tank from dirty then undo the locking ring that holds the tank unit to the tank and remove the unit. I think on this model of truck the complete unit gets changed not just the pump. assembly in reverse.
Check the basics first: fuse(s), relay, look at any wiring going to fuel pump under vehicle and inspect for broken or damaged wire. If all else looks fine, then more than likely need a fuel pump.

sounds like the thermostat gasket is leaking. Might as well change the thermostat and gasket at the same time. make sure the hose clamp is tight sometimes it needs to get tightened up. could be lealking from the hose and running down.
check fuse first in fuse box if not that then you will probably have to drop the fuel tank and change the fuel sending unit: Note check it first before installing new one because if for some reason thats not it you can just take it back without to much extra effort of having to drop tank again also check the old one by simple hot wiring it.
Sorry for the delay. I am personally going back to answer your unanswered question. I do not know if you still need the answer, but I am going to answer it in case you still do.

i have a 1999 ford explorer v8 5.0 and it is leaking right behind the waterpump. but not from the pump, about 5 inches behind the pump, like by the block, what is it?
