For my 1997 Cadillac Deville limousine with 4.6 L Northstar it should be 196 to 205 deg. And top out at no more than 230 deg. F. Check multispeed fans for high speed turning over and antifreeze fluid level in overflow tank. Also, check for head gasket leaks through tailpipe which will show up as steam when you start the engine.

What is the normal temp for cooling system in 1997 cadillac northstar engine operation?

Thermostat would probably be wide open around 85-90 degrees. Pressure cap limits boiling temp to about 105.

What causes my temp gauge to fluctuate on the high side

The Northstar engines were notorious for head gasket problems. You likely put a band aid on it when surgery is required. I'd recommend that you have the cooling system flushed & pressure tested as a start.

Temp got up to 230 on my 99 cadillac deville is that normal

Make sure your engine is breathing properly, by regularly changing air filters. Flush your cooling system once each year and pressure test. There are cooling lines that cross over the rear of the engine that get corroded and may begin to weep antifreeze..you can view these lines by removing the engine cover....if you've had a consistent odor of antifreeze after running, with no drippage evident, this area is probably the culprit.....love my 99...

Engine is overheating. Radiator cooling fans are not coming on.

The northstar engine has head bolt issues, test for exhaust in the cooling system. What happens is under load compression gasses get pushed into the cooling system, and that pushes coolant out....
One clue is the loss of heater temp.
This is extremely expensive to fix, as you need to totally disassemble and put block on machinists bench for new head bolt threads in the aluminum block...
Replacement of head gaskets will only be short term fix.

What is the correct temp on a 1998 Cadillac de ville my cadillac is not should me the correct temp in my gate and is overheating.

The normal coolant temp should be around 200-215 degrees.
The cooling fans will come on at around 225-228 degrees.

The most common overheating problem with the Northstar engine is a blocked purge line(small hose). The purge line is designed to purge air out of the cooling system.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank (not the cap) ,this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank,if there is no coolant flow from this small hose,it is blocked and this will cause overheating.
If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank.Or trace the hose back until you find the blockage.
The hose goes in to the engine to a crossover and comes out the other side close to the thermostat housing, the blockage may be there.

98 Cadillac Northstar motor running hot in 30 min.

The normal operating temperature for the Northstar engine is around 210 degrees.
The fans will not come on until the temp hits 225 degrees.

The thermostat in the northstar engine is located at the bottom radiator hose (unlike most conventional cooling systems).

If the other end of your purge line is not connected to anything then that is the problem......it must be reconnected otherwise the cooling system is not pressurized.

Car blew off coolant with no overheating;no other obvious problem

if your car normally runs at 190, anything higher is abnormal, even if its not completely overheating. since it started to get hotter when you stopped, and didn't do it while running errands, i would check the electric cooling fans. when you're not moving along and not pushing fresh air through the radiator, this is when you need the fans to work. next time you stop and sit awhile, if the temp starts to creep up, get out and look at the fans and see if they are working.

What coolant temp should i have, while driving temp gets to 222 f. is this normal?

222 is quite normal for the Northstar engine.
The cooling fans don't come on until around 225 degrees unless of course you have the air con on.
