i have a 2003 sequoia ltd and i can tell you that the virtual traction control lights will come on after ignition and remain on as a result of anything that has affected your vehicle operation. from sensors to seals, the computer is designed to shut down the traction control if it has determined that any part of the engine/mechanical systems has malfunctioned. first it was the abs had to be reset after i slammed my brakes on. next i needed a new fuel/oxygen sensor, the passenger primary, and after having fixed both the traction control operates properly, lights go off after ignition and stay off. i think the vehicle operates more driver friendly when its off, because it doesn't go off every time one of the wheels slips. i expect it will happen next time something else malfunctions, its toyotas way of annoying you into their service shop. go to a tune-up shop, (minitune) instead they'll tell you whats wrong and it'll be cheaper.

SOURCE: skid control randomly engages without turning or

I had the same problem. the jerking breaking and pulling to one side, but if u are going over 70 miles and that happens to you, you better start praying cause it will **** so hard that its hard to control. the yaw rate sensor (prox $400 on line) needs to be replace and adjustment (i beleave only the dealer can adjust). What I did to solve the problem is to eliminate the sensor ($0 cost). now my SUV drives and handle just like a regular truck without traction control. Toyota is not helping on this matter and dealers just dont care. I will not put my family thru the same scarry ride. My solution eliminate the sensor, the light is on @ all time but in return a smooth ride. Im not telling you to do what I did, but Im telling you it is the Yaw Rate Sensor. Good luck.

What is a yaw rate sensor & how does it affect braking?

This sensor detects a deviation of the vehicle from the centerline of the vehicle such as in a skid, the computer which is part of the skid control and abs system then adjusts the brake and throttle to pull the car out of the skid, the driver is not in control at that time until the vehicle skid is recovered, it is also a deceleration sensor. The yaw rate sensor does nothing under normal conditions

My lexus just quit working, it will crank but die when you put it in gear, the check engine light came on with a code of VSC any ideas. Thanks.

Saw this on a Lexus user club site ---
  • Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) senses the onset of loss of lateral traction and helps the driver stay on track. Input from four wheel-speed sensors, a yaw-rate (directional) sensor, a deceleration sensor, and a steering-wheel-angle sensor is communicated to the VSC computer. The system has the ability to reduce power and to control the brake actuator. Working with both ABS and TRAC, the VSC system helps the driver to compensate for loss of lateral traction, which can cause skids and loss of vehicle control. Lexus Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) is an electronic system designed to help the driver maintain vehicle control under adverse conditions. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Factors including speed, road conditions and driver steering input can all affect whether VSC will be effective in preventing a loss of control.
However, it appears Lexus owners who have reported this sort of problem did not have to do anything to fix except - things like .. uncap gas cap and put it back, remove battery leads for about 10 minutes and put back, tighten air filter hose ...all wierd.

Have you checked your owner's manual ?

My 2003 Toyota Sequoia's "Trac off" light, "VSC Trac" light and "abs" light all came when i turn the ignition on and didn't turn off any more.the dealer said got c1223 and c1244 code. how can this problem...

I had the same problem after I changed my brake pads. I found out later that it had nothing to do with the brakes. I had the codes on a piece of paper, but iI wound op throwing it away so I dont know if this is your exact problem. My problem was a part called a YAW RATE SENSOR . The part was about $500.00 including installation by an independent repair shop. Something else that I noticed was when you first start up and drive off, there are two small click sounds that are normal. After the warning lights came on, I did not hear those clicks. After the Yaw rate sensor was replaced, the clicks came back.
