Do I need to replace ignition coils on a 1999 Crown Vic 4.6 running poorly missing on Cylinders 1,2,3,and 4?

Posted before about problems with this car. 30,000 original miles. Purchased with 18,000. Ran fine until Trans rebuild and suddenly runs rough, They could find nothing other than misfires. stumbles under load and vibrates on acceleration. When pedal pushed to floor takes off fine otherwise stumbles and shudders at cruising speeds. Gas Mileage down from 21 to 11 mpgs at last fill up. Been to Ford Dealer twice for diagnostics. Ford says replace all O2 sensors (done) suggested replacement of #1 Coil only. Firestone Says could be MAS or PCM. Replaced all spark plugs. Subsequent testing by other independent shop shows Cylinders 1,2,3 and 4 missing. NOT showing any codes. Should I replace ALL The coils and if so what ones are reasonable and good, not requiring a 2nd mortgage?

SOURCE: Ford Crown Vic p0300 random cylinder misfire

take a look at the EGR valve it could be either vacum controlled or electronic either way what seems to be the problem is that the valve is stuck in the open position until the engine warms up you can gently tap the egr valve with a small hammer or a screw driver and you can see that it runs smooth, now if the egr valve is vacum controlled replace the valve. if it is electronoc controlled replace the valve and the module for the egr valve.

SOURCE: have a 1999 ford escort

Look at the Crank position sensor. If it doesn't send the signal to fire those cylinders the coil packs won't fire.

SOURCE: diagnosed with ignition coil problem,

2006 3.9 has to be a T-Bird or LS

There are no spark plug wires

It has Coil-On-Plug individual coils

Plugs don't fail --they get changed at 60,000 miles
give or take, say every 3 years

The front (2) O2 Sensors get repalced at 100,000
miles. The ones closest to the engine

Clean MAF Sensor at least once a year

I have no idea how you inspect a pcm,if your
at home & have no scanner or PC Based Software

Egr Valves fail early on those & other fords

You could test, not look at,actually put an oscilloscope
on the TPS Sensor

Any oil on a spark plug requires a new valve cover gasket

If a coil was replaced based on a code alone, you may have
replaced a good one,not what needed to be replaced if any

SOURCE: Replaced plugs and coil pack on 2001 ford taurus now car will not start

You will need to figure out if you have spark to the plugs, and if not- if you have voltage to the coil to proceed.

96 E250 300 ci Was running perfect then started missing Replaced vacuumed hoses, found 1 loose spark plug, and 3 that were finger tight. Replaced all 6 plugs.

If your 96 E250 300ci was running perfectly and then started missing and the code is indicating a miss fire in cylinders 1 and 2, there could be a few potential causes. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
  1. Check the ignition system: Make sure that the ignition system is functioning properly. Check the distributor cap, rotor, spark plug wires, and ignition coil for any signs of wear or damage.
  2. Check the fuel system: Make sure that the fuel system is functioning properly. Check the fuel filter, fuel pressure, and fuel injectors for any signs of wear or damage.
  3. Check the compression: A compression test can help to determine if the engine is getting enough compression to run properly. Low compression in cylinders 1 and 2 can cause the engine to miss fire.
  4. Check the vacuum lines: Make sure that the vacuum lines are properly connected and not leaking. Any vacuum leaks can cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  5. Check the PCV valve: The PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve can become clogged or malfunctioning and cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  6. Check the EGR valve: The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve can become clogged or malfunctioning and cause the engine to run poorly and miss fire.
  7. Check the Engine Control Module: The Engine Control Module (ECM) controls the ignition and fuel systems and if it's malfunctioning it can cause the engine to miss fire.
It's important to note that some of these steps may require special tools and knowledge of the vehicle's engine system, so it's best to take it to a professional mechanic to avoid causing more damage.

Does the crown vic police intercepter take as much oil as the regular crown vic? (when changing the oil and filter)

I ~think~ the 1999 is the same as the 2000 (mine is a 2000 P71)

The 2000 CVPI (Crown Vic Police Interceptor) owners manual recommends the following:

Engine Oil - Motorcraft SAE 5W-30 Super Premium Motor Oil 5.0 quarts

Transmission Fluid - Motorcraft Mercon V ATF 13.9 quarts (fluids Mercon & Mercon V are NOT INTERCHANGEABLE, DO NOT MIX)

Fuel Tank - 19.0 gallons

Break Fluid - DOT 3

Rear Axle Lubricant - Motorcraft 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant 3.75 pints (add 4 oz of Additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A or equilavent meeting Ford Spec. EST-M2C118-A for complete refill of Traction-Lok Rear Axles)

Engine Data - 4.6L V8 Engine
Cubic Inches - 281
Required Fuel - 87 Octane
Firing Order - 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
Spark Plug Gap - 1.3-1.4 mm (0.052-0.056 inch)
Ignition System - Coil On Plug
Compression Ratio - 10.0:1

I hope this helps!
