Why did my car stall when in reverse gear?

After I switched off the engine... Put in neutral gear.. Managed to manually push backward..turned & restarted the car, I was able to get back to normal driving.

I need a little more info. I presume it is automatic, not a manual trans. Was it multiple times that it stalled when you shifted to reverse? or just 1 time. Is the check engine light on, and/or the D4 light flashing?

When a car stalls in reverse it can possibly be the reverse light switch being shorted..

SOURCE: 1999 Honda Accord Manual Transmission

I just got done putting an engine in one of these. the chances are your clutch is not releasing all the way, or you have internal damage to the transmission. you can try to bleed the clutch by having a buddy pump the clutch 30 times or so and on the last pump have them hold it down so you can open the bleeder on the slave cylinder. repeat this 6 times, going 5 pumps less each time untill you reach 0. keep plenty of replacement fluid on hand to keep the clutch master cylinder full, if that don't help even a little, I'd start suspecting the transmission itself.

SOURCE: Car stops moving in reverse gear

Sounds like the car is just slipping out of gear. Keep your hand on the shifter when you back up next time. See if you can feel the shifter move when the car comes out of gear. If the shifter moves up when it happens keep pressure on the shifter holding it back like you dont want it to move forward. And of course if the shifter moves back when it comes out of gear, put forward pressure on the shifter so it doesnt slip out. This might work for now but but i know i wouldnt want to spen 700 for that ****. Let me know how it goes.

SOURCE: 1998 Honda Accord stalls intermittently

There was a recall related to this a few years ago. I know because my engine began shutting off on the interstate and other driving situations. You may be able to search for the recall or just take it in to a Honda dealership and tell them that you received a recall notice related to your ignition switch a while back and your car has been stalling out while driving. I believe a replacement of the ignition switch will fix your problem. I haven't had any problems since. The dealership shouldn't charge you anything for the repair.

First thing - Check the mechanical linkage between the shift lever and the transmission itself to make sure it is still connected.

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.

Transmission locked up - could not move in any gear, neutral only allows to roll backward not forward - what could it be? 200 land rover discovery with 182k miles

Is it a manual trans and when you say "could not move in any gear", does the engine stall when you try to move it? When it moves backward is that with the engine moving? If you answered yes to both questions then the trans is stuck in reverse. You may still be able to move the shifter but something has failed internally. If it has an automatic trans then you may have a simple linkage problem, or it may require a more in-depth inspection.

03 lincoln aviator does not shift in reverse. all others gears are functional.....please help

If its automatic, you need a new transmission. Manual transmission, keep trying to switch gears and maybe it will slip into reverse. Or you could do what I do, don't pull into anywhere unless it's a slight hill that you can coast in Neutral backwards or have someone push you in Neutral.

2004 Jeep GC limited stalls ONLY in reverse

you have to be careful that it is not the safety neutral switch.since stall means different things to different people,it is hard to tell exactly what is the issue.if the safety neutral switch, which is wired to the start and ignition circuits is bad,it could kill the engine.
jack up the vehicle and look for bad or shorted wires or connectors before doing anything else.
the other thing is how it behaves with no load on it. put a floor jack under the rear differential and raise it just enough for the wheels to be off the ground a couple inches.put it into reverse with no load and see if the wheels turn in 2wd mode.
