Run the car with the radiator cap off or the expansion tank cap off, which is part of coolant system and is pressurized, not to be confused with an overflow bottle which is not pressurized, and the heater on high. drain some coolant to allow for expansion. look/listen for bubbles. air from the vents should get hot. give it about 20 minutes
SOURCE: Heater not working
I would check if your vent to the outside is open. If it is I would check the vacum hose that controls the vent to open and close.

did you run a compression check? if so and its good then you have a blockage in the water jacket
if not then you have a head gasket leaking

Glad to be of help ... Rate me a FixYa please .. Thanks .. Crayz
SOURCE: Prizm overheats, heater core leaks, no heat
You can bypass the core or fix it that's up to you but I would change or remove the thermostat first. If it still overheats then start looking at the water pump and radiator. Hope this helps. Good luck.

There is a bleeder bolt next to the thermostat housing...I believe it is 10mm...Its on the block....Has a small sticker that says dont open when hot..Its very small, hard toe read....The bolt has 2 small copper washers on it to make the seal....I would try to bleed it from there...
