Check for pressure out of the air pump. If there, then the problem is a blown seal in the shock.

i am assuming this X5 has the self leveling rear suspension, but not the front, right? can you hear the pump in the rear coming on?
pump is locatred under the spare tire. remove the rear deck floot & spare tire and you will see the pump in the center.
check to see if any hoses are pinched first. have someone start the car while you are in the back to see if you can hear/feel the pump running. if the pump is running, then a hose is definately pinched or disconnected.
if the pump is not coming of, then check the wiring at the pump and the fuse. if power is present at the pump, then pump may have finally failed.
SOURCE: 2001 BMW 320i air bag light is on for a while then
i understoodd that an air bag error code must be reset by a OBDII reader, not on it's own.
so this may only be a light that is failing when it goes out (i.e. means you may strill not have air-bag operation just because the lights out.
you need to have the codes read to know if there is a general fault with the air bag system or it is a specific bag.
