How do I set the timing on a 2000 au falcon with #1 at tdc? Should the line on the cam sproket be pointing up and down?
Replaced the head gasket, had the sprocket cable tied to the timing chain to make life easier. Called a mechanic to come help me lift the head.
He cut the cable ties and removed the sprocket.
He did scratch a mark onto the sprocket and the chain but when I reassembled it would not start. Got a couple of small backfires but no idle.
I have brought the engine back to top dead centre but am unsure of what I should do.
I have no money for a mechanic.
Helpful advice appreciated.

Hi,if I was you I would put the distributor in the only way it will fit.
as long as you have got the valve and crank timing gear setup correctly you cant do eny damage.if you have set the valve and crank so when you turn the crank twice from tdc mark and the marks line up then you can sort out the ignition timing out after.
hope this was some help
did you change the timing belt ..when the head gaskets are replaced ,,the vehicle got so hot it stretched it out of time ..It is mainly a strong rubber band in my opinion ,,but it will not crank if the belt is out of time totally or if the belt is broke ..takes me as a mechanic 4 hours to do this job
On almost ALL Chevrolets Timing Marks are the Top Gear is your Cam Sproket,The DOT on the Casting goes straight Down at 6-a Clock, Then your Crank Shaft Sproket Goes Straight up at 12 A Clock. So the Dots are Meeting Each Other. This Will be TDC Top Dead Center.
Hi, to set the timing you should turn the No.1 piston to TDC, then turn the cam to where both valves on No.1 are close. The timing mark on the sproket should now be in line with the mark on the cilinder head. With No. 1 still on TDC fit the chain. After fitting turn the engin a few times by hand to make sure there's not a valve pushing against a piston.
Put the engine at TDC compression stroke , Thats when the valves are both closed on No 1 cyl and the piston is on its compression stroke .then align all cam and crank marks. set dizzy on No 1 cylinder (rotor pointing at #1 plug wire) . rotate engine 2 revolutions and recheck all marks. Fire away

Turn crank so that timing mark on front pulley is at 0 degrees.
Remove the timing cover and you should see a mark for the cam to line up with.
You want the cam lobes on No.1 cylinder to be pointing away from the followers wether they be rockers above cam or buckets below. This will be the compression stroke.
Once the cam timing is set you can recheck the distributor. It should point to No.1.
