Knocking sounds like lifter noise due to "dry start". Try using quality oil filters which have a anti-drain back valve, better quility oil. On trans issue, when did you last change trans fluid and filter?

Knocking on cold start may be hydraulic valve lifter collapsed until engine builds oil pressure. Quality oil filters contain anti-drain back valves which help prevent this, while cheap filters do not. Try using Wix filters and quality oil in correct weight for your local expected temp range. Trans issue may relate to dirty trans filter. When did you last change trans filter and fluid?

You have described symtoms usually associated with two different engine problems. The knocking is generally a sign of a lower engine (Con rod or main) bearing failure. The smoking is generally a sign of oil in the upper cylindr/combustion chamber. This can be traced to rings and or valve problems in most cases. Unless of course a valve or valve spring has failed which may cause physical damage to the upper end. Any further attempt to start or run the engine at this point without a proper diagnosis could caus efurther damage. Did the eng stop running after the smoke was seen?

Possible. It's hard to give you an accurate cause, since I'm not able
to hear the sound. Most of the time, when you hear a slight wrapping
sound, it's a rod bearing,or crank bearing. When the rod bearing goes,
you'll know it,since it will knock like an SOB.

sound as bad connection, inspect battery terminals and grounds, also inspect ignition switch connector for bad contact and burned out pins, if so need to replace switch and repair connector, did not stated what year or eng. size

a knocking sound in an engine is never good. with a high mileage engine things start to get worn. so bearing clearances get larger and things begin to knock and rattle. i would try running a higher viscosity oil than is recommended it might help with the knock. but truthfully it probably needs to be rebuild or a whole new motor installed
