My 96 subaru legacy outback had a leaky water pump, so I replaced it, and the timing belt, etc. I installed everything, no problem, got it timed correctly (I think), and now it won't start. It backfires and coughs occasionally, but won't catch. I checked for fuel coming out of the fuel filter, and that was good. Any suggestions, before I tear it all apart again and re-time it??

Sounds like your timing marks are incorrect, make sure align with the MARKS, not the DOTS on the cams.

Locate your vehicle's computer connector (ALDL), most are on the lower driver's side. In some vehicles you might need to look around a little, on the passenger's side, and around the center console under a plastic cover. For more information, check your owner's manual. This device gathers information that was stored in your carsECM. This information ortrouble code can inform you the system or sensor that is malfunctioning. Look up the code in our diagnostic trouble code chart. After repairs have been made use the code scanner to clear trouble codes and recheck system. B. Testing Fuel Pressure. Test for proper fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. Connect the gauge to the test port on the fuel rail. Fuel pressure reading's very depending on the system your in our vehicle, but most throttle body injection cars (TBI) are between 13 psi and 17 psi. and most (DPI) direct port injection systems are between 40 psi and 55 psi. To find out your vehicle system fuel pressure consult arepair manual. If little fuel pressure is present the fuel pump needs to be replaced.

C. Test for Weak Ignition Spark
. A weak ignition system can be a sign of a failing ignition component. Remove spark plug wire and insert an extra spark plug into end of wire, attach spark plug to engine ground then crank engine. You should observe blue spark between spark plug gap. If a yellow spark is observed, your ignition coil is weak and needs to be replaced. If your spark is not consistent you may need a ignition module.

D. Inspect the Main ECM Relay
. If the ECM relay fails it will shut down the engine management system. This relay carries high amperage and is prone to failure. To test install new relay then test drive to recheck symptoms.

E. Testing the Ignition Switch
. This test requires a electronic test light. When vehicle dies test the power side (+) of your ignition coil with the key on, the test light should illuminate. If your test light is not lighting suspect your ignition switch or ignition relay. To trouble shoot this condition you will needwiring schematic for your car.

Do you have to change the water pump when changing the timing belt/timing?

You don't have too, but not bad idea, the timing belt drives the water pump, if you just replace timing belt, and not water pump, water pump could go out and mess up the timing belt, now it has to be done all over again, timing belt, water pump and labor.

Timing belt broke and need timing marks diagram 2.2 subaru

the timing marks are on the camshaft pulleys and there are 2 notches on each pulley> they line up with 2 marks on the engine block for each pulley> and the crankshaft has a notch that lines up with a mark on the engine block aswell> pluss the new timing belt will have white marks on it that will line up with all of the marks on the pulleys when they are in the right place so its nearly impossable to do it wrong

2000 Subaru Outback wont start.. no fuel.

Are your injectors firing into the engine? You can buy a test kit to double check that. Is there spark at the plugs?

I had the same problem sorta with my civic it turns out after doing timing belt water pump, and many gaskets i had a huge vaccum leak.

Also check your fuel lines to see if they are loosing pressure somewhere

Is there a timing belt or chain in a 2004 Subaru Outback wagon? If it is a belt, at what mileage should it be changed?

The 2.5L engine has a timing belt and it should be replaced at 105K. The 3.0L engines have a timing chain and are not serviced regularly.

Info on replacing water pump on Subaru Legacy and how much work there is attached. Also on 1992 wagon is there a rotor for the spark or is there just a coil. Cheers Terry

The water pump is run by the timing belt.Involves the draining the antifreeze, removing the radiator/condensor fan motors, harmonic balancer,alt./ac./p.s. belts, timing covers and timing belt.Along with a new pump,a new timing belt should installed.Timing marks are critical and it should be repairer by a garage.Should take about 1 to 2 hours or so to do if everything comes apart easy. Also there is no cap or rotor, only a coil pak.Hope this gives you a better idea.
