Check the condition of the oil and consider having it changed as this may be the primary reason for the problem. Run fault codes to check for faulty TCM unit.. The engine doesn't need to be at operating temperature and neither does the transmission oil but old dirty oil will slow down the operation of the selector valves and solenoid/servos in the transmission until the viscosity gets low enough to flow freely.

More info needed. Does the temp gauge read fully warmed up when the engine is first started? Do you get heat right away out of the heater?
Hi,
I own a 2003 mazda 323 protege which I recently have had to allow the engine to warm up before I can get it to move forward in first gear. If i press the accelerator while it is cold, it will eventually start moving forward slowly until it picks up some speed. what tends to happen at this point though is that it will jump into second gear after a while and the hold light will start flashing. If I continue to drive like this the light continues flashing and the transmission sticks in second gear. however if i turn it off and restart, it will start and operate as normal. also once the engine has not completely cooled down between turning off and then back on it will operate as normal. so this problem only occurs when i turn on the car in the morning when going to work or when i am leaving work in the night. does anyone have an idea what could be the problem or has experienced this before.
and no the temperature guage does not read fully warmed when the engine is first started. the question on the heater you will have to guide me on as I am not certain what heater you are referring to
