Most likely the sound is coming from your "window lift assembly" being torn up. Your window motor attaches to the back of the assembly and winds up the cable that raises and lowers your window. Most likely the cable has come unattached and is grinding inside.
You can buy a new assembly from Autozone (about $100 is what they usually run) and replace it. The first step is to remove the side panel from your door. Once the panel is off you can see where your motor is bolted on to the center of your door. Remove the motor and then unbolt the rest of the window lift assembly. Be careful though about removing the pins that attach your window to the lift assembly. Due to the curve of the glass, it only takes a little pressure to shatter the glass. Once the window lift assembly is replaced, put everything back the way it was before and you are good to go.
It is not that complicated of a job, it just takes a little patience. Good luck!

It sounds like you need a regulator. i would not suggetst Autozone for this part. dealer only. i would also not suggest that you attempt this job yourself. there are some regulators that most people can do without any training. a newer VOLKSWAGEN is not a place to start! bite the bullet and take it to a glass shop (yes, one that has an address!) or the dealer. you will be glad you did.

The driver's side window has become "detached", is

I would say your window is off track. You will need to remove the panel to get to it. The screws to the panel are probably in the corners. Take the panel off, should just be 4-5 screws. You will have to remove any plastic and foam inside the door to get to the window. Once removed, you should have access to the window track. If you have a question, let me know. I am here to help. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

My VW passat 2001 model has passenger door electric window stuck. I can hear the motor running on the door. How can I fix this problem.

The window regulator or plastic tabs attached to the glass is likely broken and will need to be replaced, if you can hear the motor running but the glass does not move. If you're handy with fixing cars, you can purchase a window regulator and change it out fairly easily by removing the door panel and swapping the regulator out. If the plastic tabs on the glass are broken, you will have to take it to an auto glass shop to have new tabs replaced on the glass.

How to repair front driver side widow motor.at fir st there was a grinding sound that made me think it was off track. now its not doing anything. motor works all the way up and down but glass doesnt move.

{: ) Sounds like you have a faulty window regulator. Usually the regulator cable gets broken or detached. If this is the case, your window may not move at all, even though the motor seems to be working when you switch the button up or down.
The door trim panel need to be removed totally. Once removed, you will find two bolts for the glass catch, 3 bolts for the motor, and 4 bolts for the regulator.( all #10mm )
Begin by loosening the 2 bolts on the rubber insulated glass catch, just enough to pull the glass up from its track. You may need an assistant. You need to lift the glass (only) to the top closed position, and apply a strong masking tape to hold the glass on that position for the time being.
Continue by removing the motor and regulator bolts. I hope the replacement part is readily available. I think the window regulator comes in assembly, the motor is integrated to the regulator.
When bolts removed, simply pull out and fold to remove outwards. Be sure you remember how it was mounted before you removed it.
Installation is just the reversal procedure. Position first the regulator assembly and semi-tight all the bolts. Its better if you just follow the old bolt markings. Secure motor connection.
Loosen the two bolts on the glass catch, just enough for the glass to slide and seat freely. Temporarily connect the window switch. Press the up button slowly and align the glass with the catch. When glass seated fully, tighten the 2 bolts on the catch to hold it firmly. You can remove now all the tapes you sticked.
Try to operate the window up and down carefully and observe. Make that final tightening of the regulator with the glass resting in the the full up position. Re-install the trim panel. Goodluck.

The motor on the windows make noise but the glassdoesn't move

The window actuall sits in a frame inside the door and the motor raises and lowers the frame along with the glass. The arms which connect the motor to the frame can become detached and as the motor runs only the connecting rod moves but the frame holding the window stays in place. If you can reve the interior door panel you'll see exactly what I mean. You may even be able to repair it yourself. If your hesitant about removing the door panel take it to a mechanic or dealer.

Driver side window on my 04 vw passat wont go up or down but motor seems to be working

Depending upon the actual sounds your hearing the windo could have come off its track, or the linkage between the window motor and the window hardware has become disengaged. In either event you will need to remove the interior door panel in order to observe the proble, and then determine whether you will be able to repair the problem. The access holes are small, and the metal edges are sometime rather sharp. Other than that the job may not be all that difficult if you are mechanically inclined. Dealer cost could be in the $300 range, mor if a new window motor is required.

You need to replace the window regulator assembly.
The cables that run the glass up and down have broken inside the regulator.

Hope this helps. A FixYa rating would be greatly apprecited.

Rear window on driver's side slides down

I've had this problem and I believe its a common problem with S types. There is a white plastic slider that wraps around a metal strut and moves up and down as the window opens and closes. The problem is that the plastic slider breaks if the car door is slammed when the window is half way down, When this occurs the slider breaks free and the wire that pulls it up and down wraps itself around the motor and jamms everything up. The fix is to replace the window regulator as a complete unit. This fairly straight forward and worth the effort as you most likely will be replacing the other regulators if you keep the car for a while. Buy the regulator either from Jag dealer or OEM part which is approx 1/2 the cost (I found mine on ebay!). Make sure your get the correct unit, left, right, front and rear are different. Take off the door panel, its all clips except you need to unscrew the two scews under the rubber insert in the door pocket first. After you have removed the panel remove the black plastic cover as well. You need to detach the glass window from the regulator, This is done by punching out the brass insert in the middle of the plastic plug that is pushed through a hole in the glass. Be careful, if you hit it too hard you can break the glass, I ended up drilling it out as this was easier. Once you have the plastic plug out the glass is detached and you can remove the regulator. This is just a few screws, the only tricky part is to get the angle right to pull it out the door frame. Installation of the regulator is just the reverse. Good luck.

Driver's side window won't go up or stay up!

It has become disconnected from the glass. If it is a cable type like Toyotas they are expensive to replace. If it is similar to ford you can open the door poanel and reglue the glass to the scissor mechanism that opens and closes the window.
