have the timing check for having jumped time. you can also check for fuel pressure if its too low can cause this symptom. also check for spark at the plug it could be an ignition problem, crank or cam sensors. unless you have or are good at technical mechanical work this is a job best left for a shop to do.
DOES YOUR CAR CRANKS OR IS COMPLETELY DEAD ONLY LIGHTS? IF IT CRANKS AND DOESN'T ENGINE RUN THEN IT IS EITHER THE ALARM ( IMMOBILIZER )SYSTEM ACTIVATED,OR THE IGNITION KEY FAILURE. IF YOU HAVE A SPARE IGNITION KEY TRY AGAIN ( THE KEY TO BE THE ONE WITH CHIP INSIDE ).IF IT IS COMPLETELY DEAD THEN YOU NEED THE ASSISTANCE OF A QUALIFIED PERSON TO DIS ACTIVATE THE ALARM AND CHECK ALSO YOUR SMART KEY AS WELL .
When you turn the key and it doesn't start, what happens? Do any of the dash warning lights come on? Does the engine turn over but not start?
1. If the dash lights DO come on every time, but the engine doesn't turn over every time, it's probably not a problem with the switch. Might be a bad starter relay.
2. If the dash lights DON'T come on every time, then it could be the switch (electrical contacts only working sometime). First, try spraying WD-40 or electrical contact cleaner into the lock area to see if that helps. If it doesn't, then you probably need a switch. Do a search for "ignition switch 2004 PT Cruiser" and you'll probably find what you need, including instructions. Be sure to disconnect battery before replacing the switch and follow precautions against activating airbag accidentally.
It is possible that you have a weak battery. You may want to try to jump the car with another car that is idling. If you get the car started then it is a weak battery. If not inspect the wiring especially for the ignition and the high tension wires.
Most likely a cam sensor or a crank sensor. The timing belt didn't break did it? They also have an issue with the timing belt tensioner going bad and jumping a tooth.
My 01 similar issue... I'm THINK ING the ignition switch...
