Why has my 1997 jeep cherokee speedometer not working?

there are many sensors and and each airbag have sensors so you will have to get it scanned to know where to start. just a note air bag parts can be very expensive so check out your local salvage yard. they can save you hundreds. good luck

SOURCE: firing order for 1997 jeep cherokee straight 6 cyl.

153624 On cap #1 is two towers clockwise from right side hold-down screw, #1 is front cyl on engine. Firing order is clockwise.

The vehicle speed sensor and speedometer are one in the same on this model I believe. If one goes out it takes the other with it if its all electronic and not cable driven.

left rear of engine block,on transmission bell housing.best way from top under brake booster use a wrench,

How do I check a 1997 jeep cherokee were the speedometer and the gas gage are not working?
blown fuse. #9 and #18 per FSM.
only those, i bet not ,but????
did you SCAN the PCM first? i bet not.

the scan tool will show DTC errors, what are they
this is and electronic head, and the PCM sends serial data(CCD) to
the head, telling it speed, and fuel.
loss of comms errors are not good, so check fuses first.

I took my 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport to have the transmission resealed and after I received it back I discovered that my speedometer will only remain at zero mph.
The speed sensor that is located on the rear of the transfer case was not indexed during reinstallation. There are marks on the sensor, that have to point and align with the marks on the case.

I need to locate where the Speedometer Cable is located in my 1997 Jeep Cherokee Country V6 4WD.
Seen some on the trans tailshaft and some on the transfer case. It's not a cable, its a wire....Works like the little generator we used to put on bicycles to power a headlight...faster it goes, the more output...Spedometer head is pretty much a big voltmeter with numbers on it. I've also heard that some are like a revolution counter like they use on machines in factories. (don't know that for sure.) Also don't know what year they started using it, so I could be wrong on what it is but not where!

The speedometer on my 2002 Grand Cherokee Jeep stop working?
I believe your speedometer works off of a sensor either in the wheal or transmission, check this first then check your speedometer, sometimes they go bad and you have to replace the entire dash.
