Yes Lloyd, so long as the battery cable is disconnected the light will stay off. However it will be hard to start the car without a battery so this is a fix only if the vehicle is to be a museum piece.
You may want to have the car checked and find out what problem is causing the light to come on and get that problem fixed. For when you hook the battery back up that light will come on again.
Check the battery and try to jumpstart your car. Or borrow an OBD II scanner and plug it in to the connection under the dash/steering wheel area and see what the error code, problem is.
you probably got a defective alternator...this happens more than it should...perform alternator output test at 2000 rpm you should make 13.6 volts and up to 100 amps of power under load.
What exactly does it sound like when you try and start it?... Try spraying some starter fluid down the intake and see if that helps. Let me know what you find out.
