I just replaced mine and had the same problem. If you look at the new one, you should find a small hole at the base of the metal tube. Using a mirror, I located the same hole in the one in the valve cover and inserted a pointed awl into it and was able to pry it out. Do it slowly since you are prying against plastic. When inserting the new one, I found that it should not be inserted as far the original one was and has a gentle snap.
SOURCE: How do you reset the
-Turn the key to the run position (where all the dash lights come on)
-Immediately push the accelerator pedal to the floor 3 times, taking about 1 second for each push
-The pedal has to go all the way to the floor and all the way back up.
-After the third pump, turn the key to the off position
It may take a couple of tries to get it right. It's basically a rhythm: key on...push...push...push... key off.
Hope this helps!
