Overheated, gave it a rest at 5 minute intervals til the temp gauge was in normal range. after about fifteen miles of this it started blowing cold air (had heat on to relieve some of the heat from the engine) and making a knocking sound when i accelerated. what do i do???

The blend door (mode door ) is a very common issue there is even an associated TSB t(technical service bulletin) it has to do with the blend door becoming warped and binding the accuator. In an opened or semi-closed position

Maybe Not Thermostat, could Be Blown Head Gasket Or Cracked Head. Working On 98 Explorer Right Now. Is It Blowing Excessive Steam From Exhaust, Water In Oil Or Oil In Water

The mode door actuator is stripped, youll have to buy a replacement from a ford dealership, they will stock it its a very common fault. To access it remove the glove box and youll be able to access 2 of the 3 mounting screws just break off the third youll probably have to remove the right air duct to gain access.

Try changing the thermostat first, after verifying that there is enough coolant in it.
