I was driving today and the charging system light came on. Immediately when that happened my power steering went out. What could be the cause of those happening simultaneously? I had heard the power steering pump whining over the winter when I would turn the wheel, and a mechanic told me it was probably because the fluid was cold, as it only happened when the engine had been off for long periods of time. As the weather warmed, the whining stopped, so I believed what he told me to be true. Any ideas?
It sounds like your "serpentine belt" has broken. The belt controls all the components; water pump, power steering, air conditioning, alternator. I'd look there first.

I have a 2000 Saturn LS2. Sorry, left that off.
