My car wont hit drive, only gears that are working are 1-2-3-R. what can the problem be?
The "Drive" you speak of is Overdrive.Youve lost connection to it.Possibly the brake pedal switch under dash has burned out and not putting power to the trans for overdrive. When you touch the brake pedal, overdrive goes off. When released, overdrive can come back on when at spped to do so.This switch could possibly just have come unplugged also.Check this first and plug it back in and drive it.

if the shifter is loose and sloppy feeling then the shift cable bracket has come loose under the dash at the steering wheel. remove the lower panel under the steering wheel so you can see under the dash then get flash light and look while jiggling the shifter. you should be able to see the cable and bracket. if the bracket is loose then tighten the bolts. note this bracket is at the steering colum.

transaxle reset mode page 148 of the owner manual. when the transaxle sensor detects an abnormal condition that can cause damage, it drops the transmission into second gear to protect the transaxle from damage. pull over to the side of the road, shut off the car and restart it. it may go away for a little while and let you drive normally. mine kept getting worse. I took it to the dealer and they had to replace a part that works with the transaxle (not the transaxle or transmission itself). it cost about $900 and took them 3 attempts as the first two replacement parts were bad out of the box.

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.

The automatic transmissions on these vehicles are known to die early in
the life of the car and Volvo is well aware that the vehicle has a dud
auto transmission. The symptoms you have mentioned are an indication
that the transmission has had it. It's basically just running in limp
mode now.
You don't say what mileage this vehicle has clocked up but even low mileage vehicles have had to
have the entire transmission replaced due to failures like yours. You
also, no doubt, have a transmission alert showing on the dash.
The
bad news is that a replacement automatic transmission will now be necessary
and this will be costly. Even then, with these cars, you could experience another
transmission failure after just another 30000 miles or so of driving.
