Have you had any starter problems before the battery replacement. If you can bump start it, then the problem is in the starting system. There is a starter solenoid either on the fenderwell near the battery, or it is part of the starter its self. If it has a solenoid on the fenderwell, replace it. If that don't fix it, buy a starter, that is the last link in the starting system. Before you buy any thing, CHECK the battery terminals and cables to make sure they are making go contact where they hook on.
I hope this has been helpful, If you have never made these repairs before enlist the help of a mechanic or take it to a garage.

The voltage regulator is, I believe, built in to the alternator on your escort-some cars have them in a different location. So, although the alternator has checked out as working, was the voltage regulator function checked? Another possibility would be loose or corroded connections, most commonly at the battery, but also at any wires that connect to the alternator. I just had a problem w/ my Ford pickup-good battery and alternator, then I found a plug in wire on the alternator has a gasket to seal out grime and dirt, it was torn and the connection was badly corroded at all the contacts. Cleaned up the connection, and everything is fine. Hopefully it's as cheap and easy to fix as mine was. Let me know how u make out. Good luck.

At a time when it will not start, try hitting somewhere deep in the engine/transmission with a tool like a hammer..
or, if you can find where your starter motor is, tap there with the hammer.
The starter solenoid gets stuck and needs to be rebuilt/replaced.

Your alternator may be going out, have it bench tested at a Checker's or Autozone to see if it needs to be replaced. If it's bad which it probably is, replace it, if not you may have draw on the battery.
