1988 Subaru GL Wagon Cranks but won't start

88 GL Wagon cranks but won't start. Replaced coil and getting good 12volt hot to + side but still will not produce spark and will not start. Cranks up a storm but no start. Suspecting ECM but not sure.

Thanks. I pulled the cap and everything seems to be fine inside. rotor seems to be pressed on a little tite and will not "pull" off but seems to be good. Getting power to the new coil but no spark from the coil to the distributor.

Before you change ECM, You must make sure you have spark from plugs..If not pull the distributer it tends to shatter internally which the eye cannot tell unless opened properly.

I had the exact problem and it turned out ther is a power module by the coil and it is a small round gizmo on a mount right by thre coil and it makes it seem like the brain and spark wont get to the distributor so we bypassed it by splicing into the hotwire that goes int the distributor by using the headlight hot lead and you should getspark now

I have a Subaru outback legacy 2.5L cranks, sparks and has fuel but wont start.

may be you should make a diagnostic and you can do it in a garage or you can do it by yourself if you want to do it by yourself you need some tools and you can find some good ones here: http://www.xcardiag.com

I need to replace the starter on my 1988 subaru gl wagon non turbo five speed and I have no idea where its located.

It will be close to the gearbox bell housing, where it connects to the engine. If I remember correctly (it's been a while) it's on the left side of the engine.

1988 Subaru GL Fuel Issues - runs lean - low power on upgrade

Will it rev up in neutral? Kinda sounds like your spark advance isn't working as it has fuel and spark and runs, albeit not well. It would be helpful if you included mileage on the car and a description of the conditions when this started to occur.
