Leaking coolant while parked and driving, leaking oil, tranny slipping and shutters and chirps when shifting, lagging acceleration, hard to drive up mountains

Idk if this is all related but i wanna give u all the info. yesterday i noticed coolant and oil low so i filled them and within 10mins there were 2 very small drops of oil in the middle of the engine back by the firewall. couldnt check again for 2 hrs but then there was a small puddle of coolant close to the firewall as well but closer to pass side. started but seems like idle is low. a few wks ago it felt like the tranny slipped and shifts hard and shutters. went up some mountains and it had a really hard time but thought it was cuz of high elevation. sometimes when i put the gas pedal to the floor it takes like 4 seconds b4 it goes. no warning lights on the dash. the check engine light comes on (not very often) and the defrost vents r the only ones that work no matter what i do to the controls. noticed the vacuum hose was disconnected so i fixed it and it was good for a while. sometimes it'll do it again but the hose will b connected and the check engine light on. if i restart the car a few times it fixes itself and check engine goes off. replaced water pump and tensioner oct 2013. Has 149,000 miles. please help!!

You need to have the cooling system pressure tested. This will tell you what and where the leaks are. The oil leaks are probably due to age of gaskets and seals. With age comes issues with vacuum lines too.

ok thanks. would that b the reason the tranny seems to have problems too?

  • Brad Brown Apr 03, 2014

Generally speaking no. Vacuum modulators on transmissions are not something that is common anymore.

Try disconnecting the electrical connector at the transmission and see if it stall when you put it in gear. You will get a service engine light, but not to worry, it will go back out once you reconnect.
By disconnecting the wire connector we can tell if it is transmission related.
Good luck, let me know.

SOURCE: transmission shifts hard when the trac off light comes on

youll need to scan for transmission codes. the trac off light is a default of the trans going into a default safety mode. Bad speed sensors and simple little bolt on items like that can cause the condition but only way to really nail it is with a computer.

SOURCE: slipping transmission when hot

Check the fluid level and make sure it is up.If o/k then suggest a trans service which will have the filter and fluid changed. This could be your problem.

SOURCE: 2002 Alero shifting hard

I have a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero and my car was running rough and stalling. Also when the car was shifting, it was making a "thud" sound. My service engine light was on, so I took it to Autozone to run their diagnostic tool. It came back with code P0108 and they advised me to check my vacuum hoses as a possible solution. I looked and found that my air hose running from my throttle body to my map sensor was disconnected. I reconnected the hose and the engine ran normally and didn't make any "thud" sound when shifting. My car is back to normal. So check your hoses. If its still running rough, you may need to replace your map sensor.

With engine at normal operating temperature why is the top radiator hose hot and the bottom hose warm?

It is normal for the top radiator hose to be hotter than the lower hose. The top hose brings the heated coolant from the engine to the radiator, and the lower hose returns the cooler water from the radiator back to the engine to help keep the engine at proper temperature. For the smell, check to see if you have any oil leaks, especially where the oil may run/drip on to the exhaust manifold. Check the valve cover gaskets, and look for excessively oily areas on the bottom of the car to see if you can find where the oil is leaking from.

Notice on driveway tranmission fluid leaking check t f top off also first gear hard shift took to DOBBS HAD CHECK OUT WAS TOLD tranmission seal on back side was leaking bad also oil pan gasket leaking...

u get a second look your self by looking at the transmission u dont have to take anything apart to find the leak the oil pan is easy so check that one first if u see any fluid on or around the pan then the seal is shot that dont mean the tranny will burn up, just keep an eye on the fluid level second the rear transmission seal is located at the back of the tranny where the rear drive shaft slips into the transmission if you notice fluid around there and on the drive shaft thats leaking also but like i said just because u have a few minor leaks dont mean the tranny will blow up just as long as you keep an eye on the fluid level. do your home work and find a good transmission shop that will gaureentee the there work at a decent price.

1997 BMW 328i convertible automatic tranny slipping

to check oil start vehicle in park and let idle, open large allen bolt [normally 17mm] on g/box sump, oil should spill from aperture. if not top up until it does. this must be done at a temperature of less than 30 degrees celsius as oil expands at higher temperatures.

My is shifting from 2 to drive back to 2 why is it doning that

Check your tranny fluid levels- if they are low your transmition will slip between gears, however if you notice any kind of free reving while its shifting (like being reved up when in park or neutral) then the hydrostatic clutches are slipping and the transmition needs repair.

Another thing you should investigate is your transmition kick down bar (it shifts the trany into a lower gear when accelerating hard to help pick up speed.

Transmission slipping......

If its the main seal gone, you will have to remove the tranny regardless because the main seal is the torq converter seal.Even though it leaks,if its slipping when full of oil chances are your tranny is no good,if it shifts fine its not to late, just keep it full of oil and have the leak fixed.Look under the front of the car when its in park, with the e.brake on and running, look for the leak.If the leak is between the the motor and the tranny its probably the main seal.Check the transmission pan, axle seals and coolant lines for leaks also.Changing the transmission is no small job and should be done by a garage if your not sure how to do it.Hope this helps.
