The van goes forward just fine . But when you try to back up it won't hardly go. Could it be a vaccum hose or a transmision Modual or what. My husband has stage 4 cancer and we need it to go places. we don't have a lot of money because of cost of cancer. Thanks, Pat

Assuming there's enough fuel in the tank - If the fuel filter is extremely clogged - try starting with the fuel cap off so it won't have work against the vacuum in the fuel tank. Fuel caps have breather holes which can be clogged also. The holes release the vacuum in the tank slowly. If it starts ok then, the problem sits in fuel supply - for example the fuel filter.
Smell the exhaust pipe - if it smells strongly like petrol, most likely it's the ignition system requiring service. (sparkplugs, distributer, sparklines)

Hello The transmission dipstick has a red handle and is located near the center of the engine compartment. Flip the handle up and then pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel. 2. Push it back in all the way, wait three seconds and then pull it back out again. 3. Check both sides of the dipstick, and read the lower level. The fluid level must be in the COLD area, below the cross-hatched area, for a cold check or in the HOT area or cross-hatched area for a hot check. 4. If the fluid level is in the acceptable range, push the dipstick back in all the way; then flip the handle
About the transmission, unfortunately this is not a simple thing. Transmission fail in this way, in most cases all of a sudden no go.In your case the complete loss of reverse means the reverse clutch band has failed or the front hydraulic pressure pump has failed, The problem has nothing to do with vacuum hoses or anything like that. Of course you must perform a check of the transmission fluid level, look under the Van do you see signs of leakage, it would be a thin red oily fluid. if you you don't see any fluid leaks it is unlikely the fluid is low. Proper way of checking the transmission fluid level:
down to lock the dipstick in place

One thing to check into would be the antitheft system. Not knowing what year or type of vehicle makes it hard to help. But like i said, engine shut down in 5 seconds or less is a symptom of a bad antitheft security system. This link explains.
