Go to autozone website and make a free account. Logon to that account and enter vehicle information and then look for the free repair guides. If they dont have it, you will need to look for a sight like ALLDATA and they are not free
You take off the top spring then the adjuster then release the spring holding the back shoe then take off the bottom spring then the front shoe spring with that shoe loose you can disconnect the parking brake do not set the parking bake to do a brake job you can't get the drum off to start with
remove the tire. pull the drum off. you'll see then that the brakes are held in place by a series of levies and springs. you'll need to unhook the spring to get the brake off then reverse the directions to put the new one on
START WITH DRIVER SIDE THEN PASSENGER SIDE REAR THEN PASSENGER SIDE FRONT THEN DRIVER REAR. USE A CLEAR HOSE OVER THE BLEEDER VALVUE SO YOU CAN SEE THE FLUID PUT OTHER END IN THE BOTTLE OF BRAKE FLUID 1. HAVE SOME ONE HOLD BRAKE TO FLOOR 2. OPEN THE BLEADER VALVE ENOUGH TO ALLOW FLUID TO FLOW 3. SEE IF YOU SEE AIR BUBBLES IN THE HOSE IF NO AIR BUBBLES CLOSE BLEEDER VALVE REPEAT FOR EACH WHEEL
Your car came with 2 types of brakes for that year here is the DRUM BRAKE REMOVAL. I will have to send it in 2 posts since the text is too long to send it in 1 post. Please vote if this helps you:
Remove the wheels and brake drums.
Remove the lower return and adjuster springs using a universal brake spring remover. Do not over extend the springs or they will damaged and will need to be replaced.
Compress the leading brake shoe hold-down cup and spring while removing the pin from the rear of the backing plate. Release spring compression, then remove the hold-down cup and spring.
Had the same problem and had to pull spring back, using two vise grips in order to do it. Then the brake cable will slip into place if you move the lever until the cable goes into the open part of the attachment on the bottom of the lever. Then turn or twist the brake shoe until the cable end fits properly.
Make sure to examine and think about which way to insert the cable end so that it is in properly to pull the lever.
Well my 97 sl2's button also flew out of the emergency brake handle. I got frustrated when i saw how much they wanted for the parts to get it fixed. But the solution was as close as my tool box. I found a forgotten tube of 5 ton epoxy resin. And since i didn't feel like spending $100,00 i took the cover off the emergency brake put epoxy gel inside the broken button put the spring on and put the plastic piece in place put on and held the button down for 10 minutes with my bare hands until set to usable strength and now it works perfectly.
it should be the right one if you have it back to front the adjuster wont work the spring that sits across the adjuster is flat where it covers the adjuster and coiled everywhere else
