A few days ago my car started running really rough and lost quite a bit of power...all of a sudden this occured...and now there is a really bad odor of fuel while its running and its mpg have been cut in half nearly...no fuel leak...what could the gas smell be coming from?
Sound like it could be quite a few things. Off the top of my head I would check that the car is firing on all cylinders. If one has gone down you will have fuel travelling along the exhaust pipe, which could explain the smell. If you have lost a cylinder it will be as rough as a badgers B*M, and you will get rubbish mpg. Check if you can smell fuel from the exhaust pipe (Not while the car is running I don't want you to get carbon monoxide poisoning), just give it a quick start and a few revs first. If it is or anyway If you take the plugs out one at a time look at them to see if they are wet and smell of fuel, (After a quick start and a rev). Check your air filter as well you could even take it out and see how it runs (Not for long just a quick blast) see how you go with that.
Good Luck
I would guess your engine is miss firing. Hence the poor running, and the smell of unburned gasoline. Start with a simple tune up and change your plugs. Need more info on your vehicle to help further.

check the fuel pressure regulator and the map sensor vacuum hoses. as for the not revving above 4000 rpm is what the computer limits the engine to with no load on it, like in park or neutral.
Let's blame the MAF senor since it is apparent the fuel system is overfueling. TheMAFsensor tells the puter how much fuel needs to provided for the A/F ratio.. Also, ck it's the first sensor in the duct coming from the air filter. The overheat could be related. Take care of this and get back to me. The maf can be purchased at a parts store and install yourself Before anything, Check to ensure that ducting has not come loose at either end which would lie to the msf sensor

If you can smell gas ONLY when the engine is running, then the gas didn't get
burned completely. It could be the combination of the computer, oxygen
sensors, and/or catalytic converter is going bad. If you could smell gas when
it's parked, you might want to take it to a mechanic to have your gas line
checked for leaks and for pressure test. Here's a website that talk a little about
gas smellwww.mycarsmellsbad.com good luck.
