I have a 04 cavalier and it is stuck in 5th gear for a while it would grind when i put it in to 5th and sometime it would jump back out and the last time i put it in 5th there was no noise and it went right in and now it wont come back out the shifter linkage is not broke the gear selector thing on the transmission moves with the shifter and it goes in to other gears but wont come out of 5th and cant find out whats wrong

If both cable ends are attached then the cable broke. Replace it.

The gear linkages are not correctly aligned.
Is the gearbox mounting in exactly the same place as when you removed it?
Even a 1/4 inch will offset the gears.

take out the console, look on youtube for videos of others doing this. most likely you are going to need a saturn shifter bushing repair kit which you can get on ebay for less than 20 bucks.

ok sounds like the transmission might be your problem
first you would need to change the transmission filer by pulling the transmission plate and draining and replace filter and fluids new fluids prefferably. if that doesnt fix it. you could have a sensor or computer part out only real way to know is to take to shop to get looked at. hope this helps good luck
