Heater doen't work, just blows cold air. Also uses a lot of coolant, forever topping up reserve. Coolant drips to the ground, don't know where from....
Running with coolant level can and will destroy your head gasket and perhaps the cylinder head as well. If the heater is not getting coolant flow you are running with virtually no coolant inside the head. I suggest you seriously look for the source of your leak or if you have not already damaged the engine, you will soon. are you mixing the coolant with water if yes,you need to just put straight up anti freeze ,because water evaporates at high temperatures .. also keep resorvoir full at all times there is a sensor in the tank that when is low it makes the check coolant light come on ,,....good luck
Check to see that the blend door linkage is hooked up. Doubtful it is heater core, as you had heat to one side and not the other. Check coolant control valve linkage, verify it is moving the coolant valve from off to on when you switch temperature from cold to hot. Verify you have coolant flow to the heater core by feeling the heater hoses where they enter the firewall. If all checks out well, then look at hvac controls individually.
First ensure the coolant is not low it must be at the right level or heater won't work top off the reserve expansion tank with 50 percent water 50 percent antifreeze mixture. Repalce the thermostat, purchase a Haynes repair manual at a Advance Auto parts store for diagrams and thermostat replacement procedure.
The first is normal. Your heater gets its heat from the coolant ciculating in your engine. In order for it to work, the coolant needs time to heat up a bit. This is true of just about every vehicle.
When it gets cold again is the puzzler.
My advice is to check the coolant level in the radiator.
ONLY when the engine has cooled.
If the level is down, there can be times when there isn't enough water to cool the engine, fill the radiator and the heater core. The result is the heater blows cold air and the engine runs hotter than normal.
So check the coolant. Open the cap. Start the engine and top it off.
It's possible you are not getting enough coolant flow to your heater core. Try pulling the hoses off the core, blowing it out with air compressor, fill with water and blow out again. Try this about five times and see what happens. Alot of times these cores will plug up or have restricted flow. They will blow warm at low speed but it won't flow enough hot coolant through to stay hot on high blower speed.
Generally this condition is the result of coolant loss, or failed thermostat. If coolant goes below cylinder head level, or thermostat remains closed, heat will stop working. Do not drive with this condition as excessive heat buildup in cylinder head can and will do serious damage to heads and or head gasket. Find out where leak is and correct it. Change thermostat as it may also be damaged. Check for excessive steam from tailpipe or miss in engine, as these symptoms indicate a cylinder head problem.
