SOURCE: how to remove the fuel pump from a ford explorer

Removing the fuel pump requires lowering the fuel tank from the vehicle, the fuel lines require special tools to remove the lines from the pump without damaging the lines( tool availiable at parts store) then remove the lock ring by turning counter clockwise , then the pump , is held to the bottom of the tank by a clip on each side of the pump once depressed the pump will come out.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: To gain access to the fuel pump, it is necessary to remove the fuel tank.

  1. Depressurize the fuel system and remove the fuel tank from the vehicle.
  2. Remove any dirt that has accumulated around the fuel pump attaching flange, to prevent it from entering the tank during service.
  3. Turn the fuel pump locking ring counterclockwise using a locking ring removal tool and remove the locking ring.
  4. Remove the fuel pump and bracket assembly.
  5. Remove the seal gasket and discard it. To install:
  6. Put a light coating of heavy grease on a new seal ring to hold it in place during assembly. Install it in fuel tank ring groove. Fig. 1: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Regular Cab Ranger pick-up 89685g02.gif

Fig. 3: Fuel pump and sending unit used on the Explorer and Mountaineer 89685g04.gif

  7. Insert the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank, then secure it in place with the locking ring. Tighten the ring until secure.
  8. Install the tank in the vehicle.
  9. Install a minimum of 10 gallons of fuel and check for leaks.
  10. Install a pressure gauge on the throttle body valve and turn the ignition ON for 3 seconds. Turn the key OFF, then repeat the key cycle five to ten times until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 psi. Reinspect for leaks at the fittings.
  11. Remove the pressure gauge. Start the engine and check for fuel leaks.

Need expert advice On how to fix my 1994 Ford Explorer starting problems. The engine will turn over but car won't start.

Internal combustion engine needs three things to run:
fuel
air
spark

Most "won't start" problems are of the "no spark" or "no fuel" type.
Check for spark. Got spark?
Check for fuel. Fuel pump running? fuel pressure good?

Just changed plugs on 1994 ford explorer and it wont turn over wondering if its the gas ladder or fuel relay switch

Is it not turning over or not firing? If not firing, it could be bad crank sensor, coilpacks, or module
If no spark

If no fuel, bad fuel pump relay, plugged fuel filter, or low fuel pressure.

1994 ford explorer

alot of ford product have white clips that are removed and the end come off.if yours has a nut on each end ,you need what is called a line wrench,it has a slot to slide over the fuel line.a wrench goes on each end and you turn it counterclockwise to remove it.it is under pressure,so be careful and you will lose some fuel.
the best way is to remove the fuel pump relay and run the vehicle until it dies out.then the fuel pressure is gone.change the filter, install the relay and crank for a few seconds and it will start
