i would 1st check the power distribution black box, located under the hood, on drivers side, there inside is several relays and fuses, look onto the inside of the cover ,once it is removed, most of thes would give you a basic description of the fuses and relays, i would check the one that controls instrument panel uses, hope that this was helpful to you.
Unfortunately I believe this can not be done because the sensor for idiot lights are different from the sensors for gauges. I don't know this for an absolute fact but in most instances this is true.
u need to pull the instrument cluster out and check the large connector to it, it may not be pressed all the way into the cluster's printed circuit board.
I answered on just like this one about a month ago. What's happening is behind the instrument panel is a plug that likes to come undone. Remove the instrument cluster, clean the bulkhead connector and re-install.
Had same problem, so I brought it to the dealership. They said there mechanic cleaned the contacts/leads on the console cluster, Speedo or tach have not failed since. It's been about 6 weeks so far!
I HAVE A 98 CHEROKEE ,4.0 , I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM , I REPLACED THE COMPUTER WITH A USED ONE FROM THE JUNKYARD , THE GAUGES WORK FINE NOW, I HOPE THIS HELPS ,,,
there are rechargeable aa batteries that wear out over few years and have to be replaced behind the tach on some cars.. I just did it on a BMW and the tach started waorking again as well as the gas mileage indicatoor gauge
Had a similar issue with my 99 Cherokee, after a lot of money wasted at Jeep dealer with the issue returning after a few days.Jeep replaced the gages, the wiring harness for that led to the gages twice.Took it to a friend of a co-worker shop and he made a custom wiring harness, the issue was the wiring harness was over heating and then failing.
