Well the diesel effect is from the idle speed being too high or a buildup of carbon inside the engine acting as replacement spark plugs.
Can you use starting fluid to find out if the cutting out is from lack of fuel ?

Testimonial: "I will test the starting fluid this morn. Someone had suggested the distributer ignition pickup coil might be the problem, what do you think? Stephen I appreciate your help im stumped. There are not fault codes on this 87 model pickup right?"

SOURCE: engine dies

I had the same problem with my 94 chevy 6.5 diesel, and spent alot of money trying things that people told me to try.I wound up taking it to the dealer and they told me it was the injection pump. They put one in it and that fixed it.It has run great for over a year and a half. This set me back about $4000.00!

it could be your timing chain and gears going out.

I have a 1987 dodge Dakota, Ill drive it for about oh anywhere from 5-15 min. then it just stops running.

OK...an 87 Dakota is 30 years old now.....I'm guessing that there is something in your fuel system that is not letting the tank vent. Try driving the truck with the fuel cap loose or off and see if that helps...I think you may be drawing a vacuum on your fuel tank and it gets to the point where your tank pump can't push/pull any more fuel out of it. Try the above and see what happens...

Check battery cable on the + side. There may be 2 cables sandwiched together on the + lug. One runs the computer and the other is everything else. Mine was loose and car would die.

Hi! The fuel filter may be clogged by dirt and rust causing failure of fuel supply to the engine. Try replacing the fuel filter and it may resolve the problem. Hope this helps and have a good one!
