Power steering comes and goes

check for a broken drive belt that controls the power steering pump and alternator.;

Refer to shop for power steering pump output. You don't play with hydraulics.

mine did the same thing. Where the steering column goes through the firewall (floor) there is a rubber seal. That seal has gotten dry. Apply a small amount of lube where the shaft goes through and turn the steering wheel. This helped eliminate my squeal.

how it seems that your rack and pinion is going out making the vehicle very hard to steer. first i would check your fluid and make sure that it's full and make sure it's not over full if it's over full the unit will mess up.

either your pump has gone or you are low on fluid

check your power steering oil level

you can try changing the drivebelt to make sure the alternator is getting fully charged and make sure the battery terminals are clean

check power steering fluid. first. if all good . power steering is going. your hydro boost brake system depends on the power steering pump if it goes out your brake go out.

The 2002 thru 2007 do not have the traditional hydraulic power stering unit that requires fluid. In these models, power assist is provided by an electrical power steering unit. Nothing to check there but the battery.
