The windshield is actually a piece of safety equipment designed to hold you inside the car in a horrific accident. Once the windshield has a crack, the integrity of the safety equipment is compromised and should be replaced. Repairing it is not suitable. If your seat belt was ripped in half, would you feel comfortable sewing it back together? I hope not.
Something that I think would be really hard is repairing a crack in my windshield. That is something that you definitely would not want to make a mistake on. It would be a good idea to have your windshield be repaired by a professional. http://freedomautoglass.com/
Small bullet dings can be filled with resin to prevent spreading, but cracks have to be fixed. Believe it or not the windshield adds strength and stability to the upper structure of a vehicle. Have it replaced as soon as possible

I also have a scratch in my auto glass. Mine's not in the windshield, but there is a big scratch on the passenger side window. My son actually pointed it out to me yesterday as I drove him to practice. We should probably both find a car glass repair place to take our cars to and get them fixed up.http://www.acglassservice.com/services
