Car stumbles, backfires until warm

My 1993 Mercury Villager starts fine and will idle at about 900 rpm, but when you push the accelerator it will stumble, backfire, etc. until warm. Initially, it was intermittent and has progressively gotten worse. It would go for weeks without a problem, but now it occurs for almost all starts. If you try to drive the car when it is stumbling, you have to floor the accelerator and the car will very slowly build up speed and be seemingly ok until you ease off the accelerator. Then the stumbling and backfires continue.

I have changed plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, vacuum hoses. My thinking is the EGR valve or the camshaft position sensor. I tried to get the EGR valve off, but can not get to it with the tools I
have.

Any suggestions?

TIA

Bob

You need to replace your distributor. There has been many problems with these. I had the same problem with my 1993 villager and had tried many different things and none worked. I went to a junk yard and got a used distributor and now it runs fine. I would try this before anything alse.

94 villager runs great while engine is cold, when it warms up backfires, won't accelerate and runs poorly

Chevys have a similar issue, code reader can determine if it is the coilpack or the distributer, most mechanics won't charge to read you the codes. Remember we are here to help as best we can, good luck

How do i set the timming on 94 mercury villager van

you only set base timing to 15 degrees BTDC (before top dead center).

Ignition Timing
  1. s1v~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Parking brake control should be applied.
Depress the parking brake pedal, and warm the engine to the normal operating temperature.
  1. Turn off all electrical loads.
  1. Rev the engine to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the throttle position sensor electrical connector. (not really necessary)
  1. Start the engine and rev it to 2000-3000 rpm two or three times and allow the engine to return to the idle.
  1. Check the idle speed. The idle speed should be between 700-800 rpm in PARK (P) or NEUTRAL (N) position.
  1. NOTE: Make sure that the timing pointer is pointing to the 15° Before Top Dead Center (BTDC) mark on the crankshaft pulley. Each notch on the crankshaft pulley represents 5 degrees.
Check the ignition timing with a timing light.

Stumbles and backfires on acceleration

Check the distributor shaft. They have a history of developing finite cracks that causes the condition your describing. Let me know if I can help you with any other info.

Heat blows cold when car is idling

You have an air pocket in the cooling system. To bled it out you will have to park vehicle on an incline or jack up the front end untill the radiator cap is higher than the heater core. The remove radiator cap and run engine until warm then hold rpm to about 1200 rpm's and top off coolant level until you have no more bubbles.

The 2000 mountianeer starts and runs fine but shuts off

CHECK THE COLD START ENRICHMENT VALVE AND OR THE IDLE CONTROL VALVE. I AM ASSUMING THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS FUEL INJECTED. ONE OF THOSE HAVE GONE BAD.
