Where is the speed sensor located on the transmission on a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4.0 V6 engine?
Polarcycle is right but there is a speed sensor on the drivers side top of the trans. toward the tail shaft or transfer case. there is as well a sensor inside the trans. itself that is mounted on the web. behind the overdrive band and drum.
If it has RWAL only, the sensor is in the rear end. If it is ABS brakes, there are speed sensors on the front wheels as well. If there is in fact a speed sensor in the tranny, it is most likely internal.
Hi,
for the 1998 Explorer XLT with the 4.0 EFI (not the SOHC), the speed
sensor is located on top of the rear diff. and it is a magnetic one,
you won't find it at autoparts store.
You can order it straight from the
dealership. cost app. $40.
Thanks.
Hi,
To be honest, It's always in the rear. I have never heard what you are informing me ?
I would appreciate if you can get back to the dealer and ask him for help as what you commented doesn't sound like he is aware of the speed sensors. In few models, there are more than one sensor, so you are referring to which speed sensor?
Thanks.

I have the sensor and the dealership said it was on the side or back of the Transmission but I can't find it so I can replace it. Any suggestions on where I should look? Thanks!!
It looks like an oversized spark plug that would fit in not screw in and has two plug looking things in the other in... Thanks!!
