SOURCE: Scraping grinding noise in front passenger side

When both a scraping and grinding noise is heard from a wheel, it typically indicates a problem with the brakes, not the bearings. If when the brakes are applied, the noise changes, it does indicate a possible brake issue. I would first check the brakes and then take a close look at the bearings, as they can still cause the grinding noise, but not typically the scraping noise. Hope this is helpful.

Is your tyre's all the same size. Incorrect tyre's will change the racio from back to front and both driveshaft's are'nt turning at the same speed then it will grind. When trying to take it out of 4WD their will be preasure on the driveshaft's and this will leave if hard to disengage. Put it in 4WD drive it forward try the gearshift if it's hard to move then reverce a bit and try again it should come out easily. For all 4WD systems it is recumended thet the vehicle is reversed a few mitre's tto fully disengage the 4WD

SOURCE: my 2006 Ford F-150 has a grinding noise in the

Sounds like you have a IWE that the gears are ground down, or a bad vacuum line to that side.

This could have been caused by the IWE ( Integrated Wheel End ) solenoid ) TSB :
http://my.voyager.net/~sscully/file_tsb06_08_15.pdf

You can check the vacuum line with a vacuum pump and gauge tester, just to be sure, but considering it is grinding while in 4WD, I would say the IWE needs to be replaced on that side. Maybe change the IWE solenoid while you are doing the work ( it will be a rounding error on the total cost )

SOURCE: Grinding sound - front passenger wheel well Ford F-150 in 2 wheel

Today and over the weekend .I too had the same problem. Took it to the dealer and they tested everything and could not find the problem. Did vac test on the lines, Test drove it with code tester to see if there was any problems . Checked the hubs... They replaced the IWE solenold. Just hope that is the fix and it didn;t damage anything else... Thanks for the above info!

1994 ford ranger 4x4 hubs make grinding/clicking noise after taken out of four wheel drive

I think yours has the automatic locking hubs that slide over the the rotor hub. If this is the case than what has probably happened is a u-joint has gone bad and wiped out that auto hub.

Be prepared for some sticker shock on those hubs. they are not cheap. The usual fix for this is to replace the front axle ujoints and what ever hub is making the noise, hopefully just one.

2005 dodge ram 2500 4x4....getting an intermittent grinding noise while driving in the front of truck..possible front differential..;[email protected]

Hi,
your description is a little generic, however, that is what we shall work on.
Is the grinding apparent whether the 4X4 is engaged or just in 4X2 mode? On left lock or right lock?

Best thing would be to put the front end on axle stands and start checking. Check the front wheel station on each side by trying to rock it top and bottom. Rotate each wheel and check for noise. When doing this check, listen for any noise emanating from the actual drive shafts to the hubs.

Drain the front differential and check the drained oil for metal shavings etc. To be honest, "grinding" noises usually are accompanied by damaged parts. It's just a question of checking each item in turn. Also check the front prop / Drive shaft for UJ's that are dry and thus will make noise. Also include the sliding spline in your check, again, if it's dry it will be noisy, and it could be intermittent.

4X4's need to have the front ends greased on a regular and generous basis.
You did not mention if you had hublocks fitted, which would be another check to carry out.

Good luck.

Auto locks for front 4x4 2007 f150 cant stop grinding noise

Are you under warranty? Make it the dealers problem if its eligible.

If the front hubs are grinding regardless of being in 2wheel or 4wheel drive it can be the hub bearings which turn regardless. If it grinds only when in 4x4 then the wheel shafts or differential or front driveshaft or transfer case is making the noise because all of these parts move when in 4wheel drive.
