When car is started the gas needle will peg itself to past full, and causes the fuel pump to stumble or stall. if i pop the emergency brake handle it will either correct the problem temporarly until it happens again. happens even while driving. seem to be a wiring problem, since poping brake handle or wiggling wires underdash does causes a reaction.

Try replacing the Oxygen Sensors... I had the same problem and replaced my Oxygen Sensors and I haven't had any problems since.

Clogged Catalytic Converter. What happens is as you push down harder on the accelerator you force more gas into the system causing a slightly richer mixture and more exhaust flow is neccessary. The easiest way to look for a clogged cat is when it's dark out take it for a ride causing it perform it's problem look under the vehicle if the cat is literally glowing red hot you either have a clogged cat or an extremely rich fuel mixture.

Check the crank position sensor. I had the same problem in a 1989 cherokee 4.0, and the solution was simply to acomodate the sensor wiring. No replace was necesary

Hey Mudkicker,
Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........
Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.
Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.
Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.
Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes
