Chevy Cobalt: key stuck in ignition

I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt LS coupe. Just today the key got stuck in the ignition and wouldnt come out until we pressed a button inside the steering wheel and it came out. But now everytime i turn on the car the key gets stuck again. Whats the problem? Is it the ignition switch or the shifter?

Does anyone know what the recalled part is for the Chevy Cobalt that causes the key to get stuck in the ignition? I would greatly appreciate any help on this as I do not have $600 to get it fixed.

Unerneath the key ignition is a door, open it, look for a white button or white lever. Push it and key will come out.

I agree with Eddie Potts post above...

"Underneath the key ignition is a door, open it, look for a white button or white lever. Push it and key will come out."

But yet... On my wife\'s 06 Chevy Cobalt, there is a little plastic cover under the steering column. Pop off the little round cover, and feel around up inside. Towards the left side, there will be a little button. Press it, turn the key backwards, and BINGO!!! the key will pop right out, no problems at all, and all the electronics, lights, radio, etc... will go out as well.

It\'s some sort of GM safety release or whatever, so you can get the key out. It works and doesn\'t ruin anything or cause damage to anything.
My wife has been doing this method (feel up inside, press the button, pop the key out) for about a 1 year or more!

My wife's Cobalt has the same problem. We found out that there is a little round plastic cover underneath the steering column.
    1) Pop off the cover with a screwdriver.
    2) Carefully reach up inside with your left thumb. You have to "feel" for it...
    3) There will be a small square push button up in there.
    4) Press it, and VOILA!!! The key magically pops out with no damage, no problems, no issues.
    5) Best of all... My wife's car just passed VA State Inspection with it like that and they never said a thing!

For me, this problem was covered by my chevy dealership since it involves a recalled part. Apparently we aren't alone :) thank god

I am experiencing the same issue on my 2007 Cobalt. I called the Chevy hotline to see if the repair would be covered under my warranty and they said it wouldn't be, not even under the powertrain. My car only has 50,058 miles. I called the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and filed a complaint. If enough people report their issue, GM may be forced to recall or otherwise help cover the cost. This is a safety concern because I cannot just leave my car keys in my car when I go out or overnight. I encourage everyone to call and file their complaint - 1-888-327-4236

Had this problem with our 2006 Colbalt LS and it is the shifter. Key would not come out. Will have to replace the shifter. That's going to be a bill unless you have a powertrain warranty. Was over $600.-00 at the Chevy dealership we have to use.

I have a 2010 chevy cobalt ls, manual trans. The key became stuck in my ignition during an extensive trip. It is a safety concern considering that we had to pump gas with the car running. By the time we parked the car at our home, I had to stall it & pull the battery to shut it off; which put the vehicle in a safety lockout. After paying for a tow truck, a diagnosis price ($150) to have chevy help with the bill, I am told the full price is going to be out of pocket & repair will cost $610, not including the tow/the diagnosis fee. Feeling so frustrated.

2006 Chevy Cobalt SS. How to get past the antitheft system on it please.

A nice simple answer, you can't. Think of it this way, the car doesn't know you are the owner, and it is there to stop exactly what you are trying to do. You have two computer ECM and BCM, plus the antitheft module and a number of sensors all trying to stop you. All you have to do is the re-learn procedure. Plan B is an auto electrician or alarm / radio installer or auto locksmith.

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .

2006 Cobalt LS Coupe Intermittent Starting Problem

sounds about right, probably is ignition switch, reason you don't get codes is because if power is'nt connecting to engine while problems occurs then ecm won't pick it up. you should have 2 ignition switches, (the lock cylinder and key switch, the other is the electrical, usually located under the dash, and commonly atttatched to the column close to the firewall, check connections first, it may just be a loose plug in connection

Try using your spare key to lock and then unlock the car. This may reset the anti-theft system. This applies to the alarm as well.
