Control knobs on the dash do not change the route of the air from the defroster, it stays coming through there and cannot be sent to the console vents or the floor vents.

The internal controls knob does not change the air flow from the console vents or to floor heater. It is permanently routing the air through the defroster. I suspect there may be a problem with a vacuum line or such, if that is what controls the little baffles in the dash that routes the air this way or that. My Hayes repair manual that I'd picked up at the local Napa or Parts Plus store doesn't have a section for troubleshooting or examining this system. I really don't want to rip out the dash when the lines are located under the hood, or vise versa.

New answer to old post but relevant. The vent door in those get hot and melt into place and there is a white plastic control left center under dash that one must move by hand into the defrost position since defrost is more important than other vents. The cables also break the plastic where they attach. The repair is to remove the entire center dash where it all is located behind. All of it. You can then see the extent what is wrong and needs repaired. Leaving it in 'defrost' is easier and cheaper than what you will spend on that cheap car replacing the venting system. Good mileage is now lost to costly repair by another motor company that makes disposable cars equal to Bic lighters!https://www.focusfanatics.com/forum/gene...

How to repair

i'd think that the vent adjuster knob/slider is not working correctly strip out the heater panel around the control knobs and check the vent direction is working properly either stiff operation so a little wd40 on the cable would probably do the trick or some thing causing the vent itself to not move

linkages which control the flow of air have broken or slipped from there proper position. almost certainly a mechanical problem. check under the dash along the route from the control knob to all the linkages you can find. plastic parts or metal cables will be involved here.

Heating / air conditioning control stuck to front defrost vents

There is a vacuum leak under the hood. Find the vacuum line on the passenger side where it comes through the firewall and follow it to the engine. You system needs vacuum to operate and without it the default setting is on defrost for safety reasons.
