Just under the dash on the driver's side. GM always put them there, I think. They usually stuck out just a little from the very lowest panel on the dash. Post back if you need the code retrieval process and/or code descriptions, and I can give you a link. Or, what the hey, here it is:

SOURCE: 1984 buick regal "service engine soon"

you need to find someone with an old type scan tool,or one that has an adapter for the older cars to read the codes. you can also do this by jumping 2 wires on tha obd connector and count the flashes. the first suggestion is the best. get the code and get back to me and we'll go from there. hope this helps Thanks Ray

Service engine soon light is on

Have the engine's obd-II computer scanned with an obd-II scanner at autozone or advance auto parts, or by your own obd-II scanner that you can buy for under $100 at Walmart or Sears.

This will help to identify which circuit is bad on the vehicle, or what system is causing the SES light to go on.

Good luck on this diagnosis and repair.

What does service engine soon mean -exactly?

the service engine soon light means that a fault has occurred in the engine control electronics or the emission system controls, and in your case the transmission will also set the light, when this light is on one or more of the following codes will be stored in the on board computers memory. follow the link below for a list of GM codes for your OBD 2 (On board diagnostics generation 2) electronic engine management system.
