Hello, I have an Impala LS 2000, 3.8 Series II, and it cranks but not fires. The car has the problem since last friday and yesterday sunday I tried again and surprisingly it started. I went out to run the car and to test it and almost arriving at home it turned off again. Since there, the car has not started again, only it has crank. There are two things that I have seen on it, one, I did the test to see if there was gas and spark. There is gas but there is not spark, and second, when the car could start and I went out to do a road test, I was hearing a strong noise of piston striking like a rattle during the driving. Do you think the problem could be the crank sensor? Thanks and I hope you can help me.......

Sounds like your battery is on the way out. Have a load test done on battery & voltage check on alternator. If all works well once it starts, I'd bet on the battery, but load test will confirm, which they will do for free usually if your buying the battery from them.

your battery is getting weak from age sounds like to me ..take it and have someone pull a load test on it and see.. but this sounds like an older battery not holding a charge anymore. Jerry and holler if you need more.

check the fuel pump relay! It sounds like it is one of your relays. If it was an electrical or sensor problem, the check engine light would be on.

My truck did this after I replaced the fuel pump. Turned out to Fuel Pressure Regulator. It would crank and crank but never start. It's located underneath the black plastic manifold on the side of the injectors.
