1992 Mazda Protoge, runs very smooth unless put into a drive gear. Upon shifting from either Park or Nuetral into Drive or Reverse the engine will immediately stall out. What's going on here? Tony in Everett, WA
It sounds like your idle air control valve could be going out on you. The extra stress from being in gear can cause the car to stall out if the IAC valve isn't opperating properly. The IAC is attached to the throttle body and is normally held on by two screws. IAC valves are relatively cheap from AutoZone and easy to replace. That would be my best guess based on your description. Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

Have replaced the throttle position sensor, the fuel filter and the air filter and I am still having the same problems.
have replace throttle position sensor, fuel filter and air filter. It is still having the same problem in drive it tries to stall when at lower speeds and misses sometimes at higher speeds. It runs fine at idol and in park.
