Engine stalls when shifting into any drive gear.

1992 Mazda Protoge, runs very smooth unless put into a drive gear. Upon shifting from either Park or Nuetral into Drive or Reverse the engine will immediately stall out. What's going on here? Tony in Everett, WA

It sounds like your idle air control valve could be going out on you.  The extra stress from being in gear can cause the car to stall out if the IAC valve isn't opperating properly.  The IAC is attached to the throttle body and is normally held on by two screws.  IAC valves are relatively cheap from AutoZone and easy to replace.  That would be my best guess based on your description.  Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.  Thanks for an honest rating and for using FixYa!

I have a 97 pathfinder which runs in park and neutral but as soon as you put in gear it stalls, if i keep on the gas somewhat it will run for a while

On the transmission, there is a shift select switch on the shift shaft. This could be the problem unless there is an engine sensor malfunction.

Car just started today. When driving to it sounds like thump when changing gears. Talked to transmission guy and he said that Mazda is notorious for faulty park/neutral switch. If we replace that it should...

The park/neutral safety switch has two purposes,
1 not to let the engine start unless it is in park or neutral settings.
2 is when you manually switch gears, it tells the computer and the computer keeps the engine in check until you shift, then the computer compensates for that gear and so on.
I would check motor/ transmission mounts, drive shafts, Suspension bushings, struts, or steering linkage first.

The idle drops when i put it in gear almost stalling the engine

That is normal, in park or neutral there is no resistance on the engine when you put it in gear there is resistance because the car wants to move. Also when you turn on the ac that turns on the compressor that is run off the belts of the engine so it puts more resistance on the engine. Low idle is not a problem unless the engine dies.
