Id suspect that you have blown a head gasket or cracked the head what type of vehicle is it and how many kilometres has it done.

SOURCE: Over heating when sitting at idle for a short while

It sounds like it may be your electric cooling fan. When the car is sitting idling does the fan behind the radiator ever come on? If not then this is your problem. Your car doesn't overheat when it moving because you're passing air through the radiator with the movement of the car. The problem could be the fan itself, the fan relay, or a temperature sensor.

SOURCE: Thermastate and high heat

Yes i would check if your radiator fin turns on when the engine gets warm.
Most likely thats the cause.

SOURCE: warning light comes on showing a radiator

coolant temp sensor is probably bad but make sure that the water level is above the sensor if not it will trip the light.

Yuo appear to have a serious conflict between bands and clutches in the tranny which is overheating the oil hence causing the radiaator to boil. I would have a tranny shop to look at your problem before you do damage to the torque converter and lock up unit and the engine

How would i know if my overheating problem in my 97 Geo Metro Prizm is a radiator, water pump, blown head gasket, cracked head or a thermostat problem. is there some way i can check for this?

Oil and coolant mixed usually means the engine is damaged.
Blown head gasket, or cracked block - head.
You may have coolant in the engine oil too.
I would not drive it.

Temperature needle rises near red zone when idle, then when moving needle starts dropping back to normal area. no leaks found under car

First, if you haven't already done so, check your fluid level in the radiator. It may be too low. The reason for the drastic temperature change is the fact that when your car is sitting still, you have too little water to cool the engine, and too little air moving across the radiator to cool the short amount of water. Then, when you start driving the car, the air movement increases tremendously to the extent that the water can be cooled enough to cool the engine.

If this doesn't fix your problem, write me back and we'll try something else. Good luck!

Ok here is the deal. 1999 ram van 3500. i shorted the battery with jumping another car. ran fine before the short but now....... no more transmission. no power. feels like being in neutral? what can be the...

Shorts wreak havoc on these newer cars with all of it's electronic. The lack of idle is the idle motor on the throttle body, it is an electrical solenoid on the body,it is most likely black and looks like a small film canister with wire and is found high on body (most likely fried)replace.Tranny issue: check make sure linkage is moving the correct distance at the tranny. You may need to remove linkage from tranny and shift the tranny by hand to see if it moves the right amount. The tranny also has electrical solenoids on it's control body. You will have to remove the pan from the tranny still on the car and locate and replace them

Car is over heating

Check for coolant leaks, usually a bad water pump will have a steady drip from the bottom of the pump.
Also check and make sure the radiator cooling fan is working.
If you find no leaks and the fan is turning the problem will probably be the thermostat.
